Multicultural Traveler

Whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure, you’ll sense the fun, lively vibe that makes Raleigh a one-of-a-kind capital and a cultural center—with something to offer visitors from every culture. There are so many great ways to getaway here, so use these listings of accommodations, multicultural events and services, restaurants, shopping and more to plan your visit.

Greater Raleigh is especially rich in African-American heritage and a local history that includes the South’s oldest black university, the nation’s first institute for blind African Americans, the first, four-year medical school for African Americans and even the foundations of 1960s nonviolent resistance to segregation. FREEDOM COMING, FREEDOM FOR ALL, MAY 15, 2013-JAN. 26, 2014

From May 15-June 16, 2013, visitors had a rare opportunity to see the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, a milestone on the path to slavery's final abolishment, at the North Carolina Museum of History in downtown Raleigh. The exhibition reopens July 1-Oct. 6. 2013, displaying N.C.'s original copy of the 13th Amendment (which outlawed slavery in the United States and nullified the antebellum slave codes). From Oct. 14, 2013-Jan. 26, 2014, the exhibit will feature a handwritten copy of the 13th Amendment. Free admission.
