Doesn’t a weekend getaway sound good right now? A weekend full of arts and culture, of the finer things? All of the cultural presenters in Greater Raleigh have done something unprecedented—created a month with artful things across four weekends in Oct.—and, in fact, every day of the month.

Greater Raleigh is pleased to offer "31 Days of Art," an Oct. calendar filled with shows, exhibits, performances, festivals... all in N.C.’s affordable and easy-to-access capital city area. Why not plan a visit (or several) this month? There are at least 31 reasons that will make you a Creative Genius!

With their internationally-acclaimed professionals and world premieres, Greater Raleigh’s performing arts companies are sure to keep you entertained throughout "31 Days of Art." Enjoy the North Carolina Opera’s performance of Mozart’s comedic classic Cosi Fan Tutte (10/3; 10/5-6), or relish the Carolina Ballet’s season-opening performance of Balanchine’s Rubies (10/27) as the company celebrates the work of George Balanchine in the A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts. If you would rather experience one of the greatest Broadway hits of all time, attend the North Carolina Theatre’s performance of Cats (10/8-13) in Memorial Auditorium at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts.

Can’t miss: Experience interactive theater by taking center stage at the Stars Theater and Arts Center in Fuquay-Varina during its murder mystery event, Martians & Venutians: Death ‘til We Part (10/4-5); or, head to Koka Booth Amphitheatre’s Of Sound Mind and Dead Body (10/5).

Carolina Hurricanes Hockey ADRENALINE JUNKIE

After a long summer of anticipation, Caniacs should be ready for the comeback of North Carolina’s NHL team, the Carolina Hurricanes, as they take to the ice and begin their regular season at PNC Arena. Catch the high-impact action of the Hurricanes at home games against the Red Wings (10/4), Flyers (10/6), Kings (10/11), Coyotes (10/13), Blackhawks (10/15) and Penguins (10/28).

With the holidays right around the corner, the Junior League of Raleigh will help you get your shopping done early during their annual A Shopping Spree! (10/24-27) at the Raleigh Convention Center. With a fantastic line up of special events and hosting many one-of-a-kind exhibitors, you are sure to leave Greater Raleigh with something unique. Browse the spree and pick up gifts for everyone on your list this season as there are exhibitors for children, men and women’s apparel, home interiors, jewelry, food and more!

Can’t miss: The variety of specialty shops on N. Salem St. in downtown Apex. Food Truck FOODIE

Imagine an event with more than 70 different tastes across 10 city blocks on Fayetteville St.... the Downtown Raleigh Food Truck Rodeo (10/13) is exactly that. Be sure to come hungry as the event features a wide assortment of food trucks and carts ranging in fares from barbecue, Cajun favorites, dumplings and more, sure to satisfy the most complex Foodie. With so much variety, this rodeo is not for the indecisive!

Can't miss: Who said you have to be in Munich, Germany, to celebrate Oktoberfest? Head out to Big Boss Brewing Company to honor two significant beer cultures in one huge event: Real Ale Week in the U.K. and Oktoberfest. Experience a North American spin on these popular traditions as Casktoberfest (10/3) will offer the largest selection of cask ales ever assembled in N.C. :: All Foodie events
NC State Fair FREE SPIRIT

Averaging one million visitors yearly, the North Carolina State Fair (10/17-27) is the state’s largest annual event. The 11-day fair features agricultural events and displays, arts and cultural exhibits, amusing midways, scrumptious treats and nationally acclaimed musical performances. Sure to delight visitors of all ages, the fair closes nightly with a spectacular fireworks show and offers free entertainment daily. Don’t miss other town fairs in Oct., including the Wendell Harvest Festival (10/4-5).

Can’t miss: Explore the world bazaars, sidewalk cafes, cultural exhibits, demonstrations and entertainment from around the globe at the 28th International Festival of Raleigh (10/4-6) in the Raleigh Convention Center, or take part in the most widely celebrated Hindu festival at the Cary Diwali (10/19) celebration at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre :: All Free Spirit events
Lifelong Learner LIFELONG LEARNER

Celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Romanov imperial family as the North Carolina Museum of History hosts The Tsars' Cabinet: 200 Years of Russian Decorative Arts Under the Romanovs and Windows Into Heaven (10/4/13-3/5/14). The exhibits will showcase more than 200 porcelain and decorative objects that exemplify the craftsmanship of artisans of that era, many of which were made for the imperial family. See objects produced by the Imperial Porcelain Factory and examples of intricate enamel work from renowned firms like Fabergé and Ovchinnikov.

Can’t miss: Touring the North Carolina Executive Mansion (Wed. and Thur. 9/18-11/14) and Gardens (Wed. and Thur. 9/25-10/23). Full of an outstanding collection of decorative arts and housing many aspects of N.C. history, the mansion tour is sure to impress Lifelong Learners, while the beautiful grounds hold a bounty of extensive flower and vegetable gardens pleasing to the eye :: All Lifelong Learner events
Sum Fest MUSIC MANIAC

With the most live music in N.C., the capital city area is a great locale for big music events and festivals, including the inaugural Sum Fest 2013 (10/10-13) music festival. The new festival, featuring both local and nationally known bands, will host 50-plus acts on eight stages over four days in the downtown Raleigh area. Get ready to ROCK as bands like Sponge and ZOSO, The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience, headline the festival.

Can’t miss: Enjoy the Light Nights at Waverly Place (Every Thurs., 10/3-17) in Cary to listen to local jazz favorites, to enjoy great fall weather and to relax in the peaceful ambiance of the promenade.
