Ambassador’s Notebook: Crisis in Egypt
Alexander Yakovenko

The political crisis in Egypt is not easing up. Mass protests by supporters and opponents of Mohammed Morsi continue in Cairo and some other major cities. There have been fierce clashes with security forces resulting in numerous casualties. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Egypt may be heading toward a civil war.

In such a complicated situation, we reaffirm our appeal to all political forces in Egypt to be patient and show restraint, to act responsibly and to seek to settle the existing crisis through democratic methods, without further recourse to violence, guided by the interests of all groups and religious communities of Egyptian society.

We also hope that Egypt's authorities will pursue the country’s national interests, including those related to long-term cooperation projects with Russia. These cooperation projects are not concluded with any specific government. Rather, these projects are aimed at promoting cooperation between our countries, and their implementation will benefit both our nations.

Russia is interested in seeing a stable and prosperous Egypt. We wish the same for the entire region, which is continuing to undergo a momentous transformation.

Egypt is a leading country in the region, and the situation there is of crucial importance for the broader Arab world.

The Egyptian people must make their own choice about their country's future, through an inclusive dialogue involving all political forces, strata of society, faiths and ethnic groups.

Like the rest of the international community, we hope that the various initiatives aimed at launching this national dialogue, stabilizing the situation, and implementing measures to lay the groundwork for free and democratic elections will be successful. We are confident that the Egyptian people can achieve that without any outside interference.

Due West: The Kremlin Faces Tough Choices Over Syria

It was good while it lasted. For two years Moscow had a free ride at the expense of the West’s confused policy over Syria. But it seems that the day of reckoning and re-evaluation may be close. As a US military strike against Bashar Assad regime’s military installations becomes more and more likely day by day, official Moscow seems to have lost its penchant for sweeping statements of contempt denigrating Washington and its allies.

View From the Global Tank: Striking Syria May Be Unavoidable – But Mission Creep Must Not Be

So the die seems to have been cast. The US military is set to intervene in the Syrian civil war to punish the regime of Bashar Assad for crossing the red line that President Barack Obama drew so publicly by allegedly using nerve gas that the opposition says killed more than 1,000 in Damascus on August 21.

Transmissions from a Lone Star: Vasily Grossman: From Stalingrad to Toilet Trouble

In 1998 I stumbled upon a Russian novel called “Life and Fate.” I was surprised because I had never heard of it or its author Vasily Grossman, yet by its size, Tolstoy-echoing title and subject matter (the book was about Stalingrad) it was obviously supposed to be important.

Trendwatcher: The Scandalous Truth About Russian Men

Earlier this month, Russian-American journalist Diana Bruk shocked the delicate sensibilities of the American reading public by writing a no-holds-barred account of why she loves (and hates!) dating Russian men.

Uncertain World: Russia and Ukraine on the Verge of a Decisive Choice

Russian-Ukrainian relations are again at the center of attention. Attempts to improve cooperation have quickly ground to a halt. The enmity created by Viktor Yushchenko’s term as president of Ukraine has not resurfaced. But while relations have become more intensive (in terms of the number of meetings), they lack substance.
