CAIRO, August 22 (RIA Novosti) – Egypt’s deposed president, Hosni Mubarak, was released from custody Thursday and moved by helicopter to a military hospital in Cairo, Egyptian media reports said, citing the country’s Interior Ministry.
On Wednesday, a Cairo court dropped corruption charges against Mubarak, 85, and ordered him to be freed after two years in detention and placed under house arrest, pending further investigation into corruption charges against him. Prosecutors said they would not appeal the release order.
Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison last year for failing to prevent the killing of protesters during a revolt that left more than 800 people dead and 6,000 injured, but the sentence was overturned on appeal and he will be retried, starting Sunday.
