Sony Corp.’s PlayStation Vita, the company’s portable game system, has been a disappointment since its Dec. 2011 launch.
But now it may be getting a second life as a set-top box for televisions. Sony said it is introducing PlayStation Vita TV, which uses the Vita’s chip sets and software, to connect to online video and network services including Hulu and Tsutaya TV, a Netflix-like service for the Japanese market.
The compact device, about the size of a slightly thicker smartphone, will become available first in Japan on Nov. 14 for Y9,954, or about $100. It wasn’t immediately clear when the device will be released globally and what types of services will be supported in other regions.
