A common explanation is that the bad jobs are coming back first and the good jobs will follow. But let me suggest another explanation: the good jobs are here among us right now -- it's just their wages, their benefits, and the long-term security that have vanished.
While the broad narrative of President Obama's speech on climate change in June was something to rally around, his support for fracking threatens to exacerbate climate change to the point of no return, while poisoning our water, air and families in the process. Here's what we need to do.
I've worked at the Drug Policy Alliance for 14 years -- and more people, even folks who don't follow drug policy, have asked me about the Sanjay Gupta special than almost anything else I've worked on over the past decade and a half.
What's with all this talk of vaginas and Christine Quinn running for mayor anyway? What is it about the prospect of a vagina possibly sitting in the seat of power that has so many people -- even people with vaginas themselves -- all worked up?
As a society we seem to no longer place high value in scientific knowledge, intellectual excellence or, for that matter, artistic creativity -- three elements that have heretofore contributed to the greatness of our society. Can we get back on track?
As a new generation that grew up in the aftermath of the '60s movement, we've worked diligently to make Dr. King's dream a reality. But when jobs and justice are still key issues plaguing society today, we have no choice but to call on everyone to gather once again.
Summers had ample opportunity in his prior jobs to demonstrate a commitment to rein in the financial sector. All the evidence shows he pushed in the opposite direction. The Obama administration's effort to portray him as the frustrated regulator should not be taken seriously.
It's amazing that 12 years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, the military commission at Guantanamo is still trying to figure out what is or isn't classified, how to handle it and the procedures for prosecutors to provide documents relevant to the case to defense lawyers.
No state should deny its residents the essential right to exercise their religion. No state should target or disfavor any faith. No state should engage in actions that contravene the requirements of the U.S. Constitution, and no state should seek to limit the independence of the judiciary.
In fact, there is nothing to stop the U.S. government from censoring the media with regard to revelations such as those contained in the Snowden files -- nothing, that is, except longstanding tradition.
The GOP is at it again -- trying to give damaging policy ideas a pretty name in hopes that Americans will not notice that the ideas themselves are dangerous.
The budget Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has signed into law -- that maintains 81 percent of the $1 billion in cuts he imposed in 2011 and 2012 -- demonstrates that supporting Pennsylvania's youth is simply not among his values or priorities.
Glenn is right in describing it as "designed to send a message of intimidation." At this point, the governments involved are desperate to shut things down and don't seem to care how arrogant, over-reaching or unbelievable they come off.
Reinstating the act wouldn't instantly fix everything that's wrong with our system, but it sure would be a much-needed start -- just don't count on it ever happening.
Since when did dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the government indicate one was disloyal to the U.S.? Many Americans oppose government policies, such as Obamacare, TSA regulations, immigration policy, and abortion, but that does not automatically equate them to a high threat.
With joblessness still far too high, the income gap between rich and everyone else widening, racism and discrimination still festering and cities such as Detroit in the throes of bankruptcy, the words still call us to fight harder to achieve the unfinished agenda of civil rights and labor.
The centuries-old stream that is democracy can run around our capital, can run circles around our capital. California has advanced energy laws. So do other states. Isn't it time to coordinate those laws, to fulfill the will and needs of the people?
Attorney General Eric Holder's speech to the American Bar Association last Monday announcing critical reforms to the way the Department of Justice prosecutes and addresses drug crimes was historic and long overdue.
Nothing says "immigrants built this country" like serving in the White House. President Cruz would be a great ambassador for immigrants everywhere.
