Opening This Week - August 16

Certificate R   -   Action | Comedy | Crime | Thriller

The costumed high-school hero Kick-Ass joins with a group of normal citizens who have been inspired to fight crime in costume. Meanwhile, the Red Mist plots an act of revenge that will affect everyone Kick-Ass knows.

The Buzz: I admired Kick-Ass for uncouth dopiness and eagerness to entertain. Do we need the sequel? Original distributor Lionsgate didn't seem to think so, making room for Universal to step in with an expanded cast and cheaper writer/director in Jeff Wadlow (Cry_Wolf/Never Back Down).

Certificate PG-13   -   Biography | Drama

Metascore: 62/100 (7 reviews)
An African-American's eyewitness accounts of notable events of the 20th century during his tenure as a White House butler.

The Buzz: In a time when a filmmaker's success can be measured almost exclusively by the amount of online chatter their work generates, Lee Daniels seems aware that, ultimately, and in the name of longevity, it's about audiences to actually see your movie. So it wasn't a surprise to hear that the Precious director, whose rise leveled off after no one really cared enough to see The Paperboy, would next train his wild style to a real-life character of cultural import. Early reports direct from co-star Terrence Howard indicate there could be a few whoa-moments (you've heard about his sex scene with Oprah?) in what might be a standard-bucking take the historical biopic.

Certificate PG-13 Drama | Thriller

An entry-level employee at a powerful corporation finds himself occupying a corner office, but at a dangerous price: he must spy on his boss's old mentor to secure for him a multi-billion dollar advantage.

The Buzz: No slick Wall Street hair in this contemporary thriller that burbles with wicked corporate espionage, just a nice buzz cut for Harrison Ford and a Romney-ish 'do for Gary Oldman. And it's back to straight-shooting genre work for 21 director Robert Luketic after the ill-conceived Killers (which derailed Katherine Heigl's career).

Certificate PG-13   -   Biography | Drama

Metascore: 40/100 (5 reviews)
The story of Steve Jobs' ascension from college dropout into one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of the 20th century.

The Buzz: Career re-shaper, Razzie-bait, or the Infamous of Steve Jobs biopics?

Metascore: 84/100 (5 reviews)
The tale of an outlaw who escapes from prison and sets out across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife and the daughter he has never met.

The Buzz: Terrence Malick has posse. And a lot of its members are making films of their own, including David Lowery, who has earned strong praise and direct comparisons to his apparent idol for his art-heavy, narrative-lite drama. Lowery also edited Shane Carruth's Upstream Color, further stoking Saints's target audience, the die-hard art-house patron.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy | Romance

Metascore: 54/100 (5 reviews)
Obsessed with the BBC production of "Pride and Prejudice", a woman travels to a Jane Austen theme park in search for her perfect gentleman.
Director:

The Buzz: Guess what? All the dowdy dudes who schlub from one film festival to another don't like this movie. But female reviewers on that circuit admit that Jerusha Hess's latest - a project the Napoleon Dynamite writer co-scripted with novelist Shannon Hale - has a sugary yet unsatisfying consistency. Ultimately, will such reviews matter? This is a critic-proof crowd-pleaser to its core.

Certificate R   -   Documentary

Metascore: 90/100 (6 reviews)
This candid New York love story explores the chaotic 40-year marriage of famed boxing painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife, Noriko. Anxious to shed her role as her overbearing husband's assistant, Noriko finds an identity of her own.

The Buzz: It's been a strong year for documentary portraiture, and Zachary Heinzerling's look at the enmeshed lives of a renowned artist, his dutiful wife, and her creative emergence should rank as one of the year's best received. We're looking forward to see how Heinzerling brought Cutie's illustrations to life via an animation effect similar to the one Jessica Yu used in In the Realms of the Unreal.
