Video: The North Pole: Where Exactly Is it?

Although you might not be planning a trip to the North Pole, it's good to know that we don't know exactly where it is. Well, it's less like we don't know where it is and more like where it is depends on what you care about. This handy video, which I found thanks to Laughing Squid, illustrates how the location of the North Pole changes depending on whether you think about it in terms of geographic, geomagnetic or magnetic terms. Henry Reich from MinutePhysics tackles this subject in the video and explains that each type of pole sits at a different place on our planet and their locations even within themselves are not fixed. Check out this video for a clear understanding of the location of the North (and South) Pole.

Photo Of The Day: San Diego Flowers

My pick for today's Photo of the Day comes from California-based photographer Alexis Wiener. She enjoys exploring and photographing the coast of San Diego, which is fortunate for the rest of us because her photography is imaginative and captivating. I can't say for sure, but the flowers in this photo appear to be a Salvia Sage of some sort. If you know the exact type of flowers these are, please let me know in the comments. Regardless, they are vibrant, sprawling, beautiful and part of what makes the California coast so entrancing.

Video Of The Day: Cape Verde

"Cape Verde - twothousandtwelve" from Qjawa on Vimeo.

I'm in Cape Verde today and as a tribute to the country's islands and this trip, my Video Of The Day today is one I came across on Vimeo of Cape Verde. This video is of the island Sal, where I am currently staying. Featuring everything from the arid, desert scenery within the island to the lagoons, salt baths and crystal clear waters meeting the white sand beaches, this video from one vacationer (Vimeo user: Qjawa) is bound to plant the desire in you to visit Cape Verde, as well.

Video Of The Day: Sydney Fog

I spent the weekend upstate, reveling in the view of the lush New York countryside as fog spills over the hills. It was a rainy but beautiful drive up and back and when I woke up today, I wanted to see more fog scenery. I came across this video of fog over the Sydney harbor on Vimeo and loved it. It's short and sweet, but moving all the same. Created by Joe Budgen, this time-lapse video is one of his first attempts and he did a good job. Enjoy.

Coopers Rock: Morgantown, West Virginia

I have lost count of how many times I have been here. I started coming to Coopers Rock State Forest in Morgantown, West Virginia, when my family first moved to the town, which was seven years ago. The 12,000-some acres of beautiful hiking trails begin just a couple exits down the highway from my parents' house. No matter which trail I plan on hiking, I always start off by taking in the view at The Overlook – imagery that simply never gets old. The hills of the Appalachian Mountains fall sharply into the tumultuous Cheat River at the bottom of the country crevice that The Overlook overlooks. Boulders stand in all postures throughout the grounds below and behind me, looking as if they'd been dropped into their place from the sky. The haze of the horizon distracts me in scenic areas like this one. No matter what type of landscape unfolds around me, I return to that indigo blur at the back of the frame every few minutes as if to contextualize that which is before me. I do this at The Overlook of Cooper's Rock. I do this every time.

Video Of The Day: Sleep No More NYC

It's not every day that I hop onto Gadling in an effort to persuade our readers to go out and purchase tickets for an event that will make a place come to life in a new way, the kind of way that enhances travel and the cultural experiences that come with it, but when I do, I mean it. After going to NYC's Sleep No More last night and reading rumors online that it might not be open that much longer, I feel obligated to inform you that this interactive theatrical event is unlike anything else I've been to in NYC. If you can get your hands on tickets, you'll find yourself meandering and sometimes running through five stories of a gigantic loft building in Manhattan's Chelsea. It will engage your senses and sometimes mess with your mind and, no matter what, give you an incredible insight into NYC's limit-pushing arts scene. And so, with that hearty recommendation, I give you this behind-the-scenes footage that will provide you a few more details about the event.

Photo Of The Day: Rainbow Over West Virginia

Full disclosure: I was with photographer Ben Britz when we spotted this rainbow, dare I say wanna-be double rainbow, over the hills of my parents' house in Morgantown, West Virginia. This rainbow was the third rainbow we'd seen that day and it was the best. For the first time in our lives, we could see the ends of the rainbow. I've always thought that the rolling Appalachian hills of West Virginia are beautiful, but it's funny how well that beauty is accented by something so natural and yet always so special. Do you have any stunning rainbow photos to share with us? If so, just upload them to the Gadling Flickr Pool for review.

Photo Of The Day: Chennai, India

Keith Pennington
Dried ginger, like other dried goods, requires careful preparation. The ginger root must be washed, peeled, sliced and left out in the sun to dry over time. This photo by photographer Keith Pennington captures three Indian women taking on the task of drying ginger in Chennai, India. I love this shot not only for its candid nature, but also because it somehow depicts the heat of the sun and the meditation behind the practice. If you have a photo you'd like to submit for Photo Of The Day, just upload it to the Gadling Flickr Pool.

Coney Island 2013: Weathering The Storm

A photo of Coney Island from May 2013

When the first structures were being built in Coney Island in the 1840s, the surrounding community was in uproar. Residents wanted to preserve the land's natural beauty. In the early 1900s, the City of New York endeavored to condemn all buildings south of Surf Avenue and the amusement community of Coney Island opposed the city. Amusements on the beach were demolished under the direction of urban planner Robert Moses in the '40s and '50s. He cleared the land for the New York Aquarium, Abe Stark Ice Skating Rink and low-income housing. Once Moses was through with his Coney Island renovations, only a few areas remained protected for amusement use only and that small designation was a response to public complaints.

Fred Trump attempted to build luxury apartments on the beach in 1964. He spent a decade in court fighting for a rezoning to no avail. By the 1970s, few visitors traveled to Coney Island and the city attempted to bring popularity back to the area with gambling casinos, taking note from Atlantic City. Gambling remained illegal in Coney Island, however, and vacant lots dominated areas that would have been lined with slot machines and card tables.

Under Giuliani's reign, the sporting complex called Sportsplex was erected. Because the Thunderbolt roller-coaster stood in the line of view from the stadium, Giuliani had it demolished one early morning. Bloomberg took interest in developing Coney Island, but when the Coney Island bid for the 2012 Olympics was lost, the plans for revitalization went to the Coney Island Development Corporation. A company called Thor Equities began buying up property in Coney Island and while evicting businesses along the boardwalk, they released a plan to build a luxury resort as well as a new amusement park. The city approved a plan to construct 4,500 new unites on the beach in 2009. Part of what makes Coney Island what it is is that the community has long-offered low-income housing, but only 900 of these new units are categorized as being "affordable."
