Is it possible to be striking and understated at the same time? The PS4 might be just that. Though the early jokes had pointed it as just being an italicized Xbox One, the sharp angles of the rhombus add a lot more character in real life than they do in pictures.

The PS4 console itself strongly resembles the PlayStation 2, aesthetically at least. It's a bit smaller than the Xbox One, with a footprint similar to the PlayStation 3.

From our time with the console, playing games (admittedly on dev kits rather than a retail version of the console), and talking to Sony it is clear the focus here is very much about delivering a state of the art games machine and trying to deliver as many games as possible to those who aren't fussed...

While it's far too early to reach any genuine conclusions on the PS4, what with all games way off completion, few actually playable, the UI and Share features yet to be shown off and the full hardware setup hidden from view, the controller and the implementation of new technology bodes well.

With its cheaper price point and less restrictive DRM policies, the PS4 already seems to have the Xbox One on the run. We still think it would be naive to consider Microsoft's system down for the count, though.
