The petition asking for the original Xbox One features is perfectly fine. What really ticks off people these days is lack of choice and flexibility. Forcing everyone to do 24 hour check in is ridiculous. Letting people opt in and allowing people to get used to it without forcing them is the way you get widespread adoption. Microsoft wanted to force people to do something that really should have been an option. If the plan was as good as they said it was then early adopters would be able to recruit their friends and family, getting people to not only join the service but also become evangelist that convince others to join.
For example with PC games, Steam didn't become the only option when it started. Rather people got use to it while Valve fine tuned it, but at the same time people could still buy disc based copies of games if they wanted. And to this day you can still buy disc copies of Steam but it's a hell of a lot more convenient and better to use Steam for most people and as a result most PC users prefer Steam.
