Hindi Society Mission & Philosophy

Here's a brief idea of what the Hindi Society is all about.

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the learning of Hindi and the knowledge of Indian culture. Preserving the language and culture of Hindi-speaking Singaporeans and Permanent Residents will provide the self-confidence and civilisational ballast essential to life both as an individual and as a member of a multi-racial, multi-religious society.

Our Philosophy

The Action Committee on Indian Education was appointed in Sep 1990 to study the problem of under-performance of Indian Singapore students. It published its report on 13 Jul 1991. One of the weaknesses identified was that the second-language grades obtained by non-Tamil Indian students, who were unable to take their mother tongue as their second language, had lowered their overall performance in primary school examinations.

The Hindi Centres were set up as a self-help, community-service project to rectify this weakness by providing institutionalised and affordable Hindi instruction to students. The Centres are, however, just one leg in a triumvirate that includes parents and students. Parents and children have a crucial role to play, too. It is important for parents to devote time, effort and money in the education of their children, and for students to realise that under-performance at school will disadvantage them in the competition for jobs in the local and global marketplace.
