Daala is the current working name of a video codec under development by the Xiph.Org Foundation. Daala is intended to be a high-efficiency codec for use cases similar to those of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC or H.265) and VP9.[1] Daala will use a lapped transform to reduce the blocking artifacts characteristic of other video codecs that use the discrete cosine transform directly.[2] It is stated that the performance goal for Daala is to be a generation beyond HEVC and VP9.[2]
On May 30, 2013, an alpha prototype of Daala was used to stream video over the internet.[2]
On June 20, 2013, an introduction to Daala was added to the Xiph.Org Foundation website.[2][3][4]
