A Somali refugee walks in front of a camp for internally displaced people near the Parliament in Mogadishu in December 2012.

Opinion: Time to raise the bar on refugee education

The numbers highlight the magnitude of the challenge: more than 15 million people in the world are living as refugees. They fled violent conflict in their home countries of Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Somalia or Sudan years ago and cannot safely return home yet. In the first five months of this year, more than one million Syrians have left home for fear of their lives, the majority of them seeking refuge in neighbouring Jordan and Lebanon.

Are there risks that go along with oil tankers in Vancouver harbour and the Douglas Channel in Kitimat? Experts on both sides of the debate give their views on the issue.

Point: Safe passage for tankers?

I’ve followed the evolution of the marine industry for a lifetime, both as a professional mariner and in shoreside vessel management, so I’ve had a front-row seat to the enormous progress in safety and environmental protection that the industry has achieved since the Exxon Valdez incident in Alaska in 1989.

Vessels used in response to a hazardous spill sit on the waters of Vancouver harbour as the federal government announces changes to improve oil tanker safety in Vancouver on March 18, 2013.

Counterpoint: Safe passage for tankers?

Last month, Kinder Morgan submitted its project description to the National Energy Board to twin its existing oil pipeline from Alberta to Burnaby and ship the oil by tanker through Vancouver harbour. If successful, this would mean an increase in tankers from about 90 to over 300 per year — one tanker almost every day, passing through First and Second Narrows, loading in Burnaby then retracing the path with its load of oil.

Opinion: Medical mishap overseas leads to family’s ‘horrendous situation’

In November, our family underwent a chaotic series of events brought about by unforeseen circumstances related to international travel and health care. It is our wish to prevent this from happening to any other Canadian family.

B.C. Liberal Senator Mobina Jaffer.

Opinion: Minority voices need to be heard in our parliamentary system

Democracy means balancing the rule of the majority with the rights of the minority. In each riding, a plurality of voters elects a member of the House of Commons, and a majority of those elected representatives together form the governing party. They represent the rule of the majority in our democracy.

A family should be able to afford food, housing, clothing, child care, medical costs and transportation on a living wage.

Opinion: Living wage makes society stronger

The current minimum wage in B.C. provides only 52 per cent of what a family of four with two adults working full-time needs to pay for basics in Metro Vancouver. Knowing this makes it clear that low wages are a factor in rates of homelessness and dependence on food banks.

To get the lead out of gasoline at the pumps, we didn’t ‘put a price on lead’ but rather used product standard regulation.

Opinion: Reduction of greenhouse gases vital

We have to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Even if we successfully defeat CO2 tariffs that unfairly discriminate against our exports, our exporters will still face a continuing — just more fair — trade threat if we fail to realize real reductions in B.C.’s economywide GHG inventory. What forms of domestic policy and/or regulation do we need to make that happen?

Opinion: Subsidies for Hollywood film producers take from B.C. coffers

Government support for Hollywood producers shooting films in B.C. attracted a lot of attention in the recent election, with the NDP arguing for enrichment and the Liberals defending the status quo. It’s too bad that ending the subsidy was not on the agenda.
