With last weekend's release of
Debian 7.0 Wheezy, Debian 8.0 Jessie is now in early stages of development.
Debian 8.0 is
codenamed Jessie in continuing with their Toy Story naming convention. Matthias Klose of the Debian Project shared
some of the planned early changes now with Debian 8.0 development being open.
Development of Debian "Jessie" is getting kicked off by bumping the glibc version to 2.17, the linux-libc-dev package has been updated to 3.8.11, binutils 2.23.2 is to be pulled in, and
GCC 4.8 will be pulled in soon. Debian is still running on GCC 4.7 right now but GCC 4.8.1 will be pulled into the archive soon as it's released later in the month. The GNU Compiler Collection update alone brings
many new features to Debian GNU/Linux and its other ports.
