Mr. Wang Jun

Mr. Wang Jun is a career diplomat and veteran multilateral disarmament specialist from the People's Republic of China. He has been the OPCW Director of External Relations since 1 November 2011.

Prior to joining the OPCW, from December 2009 to October 2011, Mr. Wang served as Senior Advisor and Counsellor to the Arms Control and Disarmament Department of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, holding the rank of Deputy Director-General. He also served as Head of the Chinese Delegation to the CTBTO Preparatory Commission during the same period.

From 1998 to 2009, Mr. Wang served as Section Chief of Documentation of the On-Site Inspection Division of the CTBTO Provisional Technical Secretariat and was responsible for the drafting of the On-Site Inspection Manual.  In 2008 Mr. Wang served as Inspection Team Leader in the Integrated On-Site Inspection Field Exercise in Kazakhstan, the CTBTO’s largest mock on-site inspection to date. 

From 1994 to 1997 Mr. Wang was posted to the Permanent Mission of China to the Disarmament Commission in Geneva as Counsellor and Deputy of the Chinese Delegation for the negotiation of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. From 1992 to 1997 he also headed the Chinese delegation to the Verification Protocol process of the Biological Weapons Convention, and the Amendment Conference of the Landmines Protocol of the 1925 Geneva Protocol.

Mr. Wang first joined China’s Foreign Service in 1977. He served in the Linguistic Department from 1980 to 1984; in the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations dealing with the Fifth Committee (programme and budget, personnel, administration) from 1984 to 1988; and in the Information Committee, Political Section of the International Department of the Foreign Ministry from 1988 to 1992. He was an officer for Asia and South-East Asia issues seized by the United Nations Security Council and Deputy Director of the Disarmament Section of the International Department from 1992 to 1994, in which capacity he dealt with initial national implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, the first Korean nuclear crises, and nuclear, chemical and missile non-proliferation issues. 

Mr. Wang graduated in 1975 from the Foreign Languages School in the Foreign Languages Institute of Beijing. He completed a special Diploma Course for International Relations at the London School of Economics and Foreign Studies in 1978 and 1979.

Mr. Wang is married with one son.
