Xbox One: Online checks required once every 24 hours

One hour of offline play permitted on separate consoles

Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox One will require an internet connection for online game licensing checks at least once every 24 hours.

The company has reaffirmed that Xbox One won't require a constant 'always on' connection to the internet for offline games and functionality, but offline gameplay is limited to 24 hours since the console's last check-in online. At that point if no connection is available, offline play "is not possible".

That applies to what the firm calls the 'primary console', presumably referring to the console you own. Logging into a secondary Xbox One - such as at a friend's house - will require hourly online checks for continued offline use.

"While a persistent connection is not required, Xbox One is designed to verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend," said Microsoft today.

"Games that are designed to take advantage of the cloud may require a connection."

It went on, "With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies."

This further clarifies a previous statement from Microsoft vice president Phil Harrison who recently revealed that Xbox One will require an internet connection once every 24 hours, following widespread controversy over the rumoured blocking of the console's use without a constant internet connection.

The mandatory presence of an internet connection offers other benefits, says MS. "Because every Xbox One owner has a broadband connection, developers can create massive, persistent worlds that evolve even when you're not playing," it said.

The platform holder has also today detailed the ability for Xbox One owners to access digital versions of their entire games library online from any Xbox One console - "no disc required", and for those games to be shared with up to 10 family members.

It also addressed the controversial topic of its used games policies, confirming that there'll be no fee for used game license transfers between friends, but games will only be transferable once.
