Daylight shines through on PC, PlayStation 4 in early 2014

Daylight is a new first-person psychological horror game premiering on PC, and as a PlayStation 4 console exclusive, in the first quarter of 2014. The game runs on Unreal Engine 4 and was written by Jessica Chobot, who also provides the protagonist's voice.

Another feature of Daylight is that using the PlayStation Eye camera, the game will take a picture of the "exact moment that a scare happens." You can then keep the pictures as a novelty, share them on social networks, or just pass them directly to the NSA.

Ron Gilbert's Scurvy Scallywags sings a salty sea shanty

This is Portabliss, a column about downloadable games that can be played on the go.

Ron Gilbert's Scurvy Scallywags sings a salty sea shanty
Ron Gilbert's Beep Games has a new game out on iOS called Scurvy Scallywags (subtitle: In the Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty), and it's a match-three puzzle game with light RPG elements and plenty of pirate humor. It's only 99 cents in the App Store right now, and that's probably all of the inspiration you need to go and download it, right matey?

Oh all right, ye lousy landlubbers, I can put an X on yer treasure maps for ye. Scallywags is a bit of pirate-infused joy. It's a simple game with mechanics that don't always light the cannon fuse, but it's got enough charm, depth, and solid fun to justify the very cheap cost of admission.

Plus, there are real sea shanties included.

Dying Light debut trailer makes a run for it

Dead Island creator Techland wants to bring first-person parkour back onto our screens with Dying Light - and perhaps provide competition for a certain would-be-sequel. While scavenging, combat, and stealth are all being billed as big parts of Dying Light, this CGI trailer shows the kind of agility required to keep your footing - and your flesh - in the game's zombified dystopia.

Dying Light is coming to Xbox One, PS4, PS3, and Xbox 360 next year.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance coming 'soon' to PC

Konami confirmed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is on its way to Windows PCs in the west, and said it's releasing the Platinum Games slicer through digital distribution networks "soon." We're still waiting on further details, but Konami noted Revengeance runs at 60 frames per second on "most modern PCs."

The port was first announced by series creator Hideo Kojima on his radio podcast last month. At the time, Platinum Games creative director Jean-Pierre Kellams immediately asked fans to direct their queries about the port to Konami. That either suggests Platinum isn't involved with the port or that a lack of tolerance for questions isn't limited to a certain founder of the company. We've reached out to Konami to find out which it is.

The Walking Dead '400 Days DLC' listed in Steam database

Telltale may be gearing up to announce new DLC for The Walking Dead. That's according to an update to the game's entry in the Steam database, titled 'Walking Dead 400 Days DLC.' The name correlates with teaser clips Telltale published recently.

The four clips are titled Day 2, Day 220, Day 184, and Day 236. Each one features a person's photo pinned on a 'Missing' board, perhaps pertaining to characters introduced in the DLC.

Back in February, series writer Gary Whitta said "there may very well be more Walking Dead from Telltale before Season 2." Also, a Polygon report indicates at one point Telltale's exhibitor page on the E3 website listed 'Season 1 DLC' for The Walking Dead. While it's never safe to assume anything when it comes to the zombie apocalypse, chances are there are some more tough choices on the horizon.

Oculus Rift support added to Unreal Engine 4

Unreal Engine 4 will support the Oculus Rift thanks to Epic's Integrated Partners Program, the developer announced today. The company also listed Intel, Nvidia, RealD and others as "inaugural" members of the new UE4 version of the program; member companies will contribute "tools and features that are trusted for high-quality game development" to the new engine.

The Integrated Partners Program (or "IPP") aims to reduce development time by building commonly used middleware and hardware support directly into Unreal Engine's toolkit – Unreal Engine 3's IPP currently has 25 member companies, including Oculus VR.

Only a small handful of games are known to run on Unreal Engine 4 at this time, though we fully expect that number to grow as the next generation unfolds itself like the dewy morning petals of a flower wearing a head-mounted virtual reality display, or something. We may have had trouble pulling that simile back together.

Asus ROG unveils 'Poseidon Formula 1' gaming PC at Computex

Asus ROG unveils 'Poseidon Formula 1' gaming PC at Computex
If you've always wanted your gaming rig to look like a weird mix between a diesel generator and a flux capacitor, Asus' Republic of Gamers imprint may have just the thing. Unveiled earlier this week at Computex in Taiwan, Asus' "Poseidon Formula 1" gaming rig is an intimidating mass of metal, tubes and, reportedly, power.

The unit gets its name from its "ROG Poseidon" graphics card, which sports an Nvidia GTX 700 GPU and Asus' proprietary hybrid "DirectCU H2O" cooling system. DirectCU H2O combines multi-directional "CoolTech" air-cooling with liquid-cooling systems to reduce the GPU's operating temperature by as much as 31 degrees Celsius, or nearly 88 degrees Fahrenheit.

That graphics card is plugged into Asus' "ROG Maximus VI Formula" motherboard, a unit that comes equipped with its own fancily-named hybrid cooling technology: "CrossChill," a system that combines heatsinks and liquid cooling. The motherboard also includes a "SupremeFX" onboard audio card, which can pump out jams through a 600 ohm headphone amplifier shielded for electromagnetic interference.

No word yet on when the rig will be available, what it will cost or what processor/HDD/SDD/RAM configurations will be offered.

So, the iam8bit Entertainment System will be at iam8bit Entertainment System from June 7 to June 20, and the console will be available to order online at iam8bit.

Sometimes we just don't understand art.

The show will include a treat for DuckTales: Remastered fans, with a 10 foot x 10 foot recreation of Uncle Scrooge McDuck's money bin, complete with giant gold coins and gems, and the Green Cheese of Longevity. It's like a ball pit for kids that's really for adults. Now that we understand.

NBA 2K14 coming on Oct. 1; Xbox One, PS4 versions at launch

NBA 2K14 launches Oct 1 on Xbox 360, PS3 Xbox One and PS4 later
NBA 2K14 will be available on October 1 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Versions made for Xbox One and PS4 are also in the works for their launches, SVP of Basketball Operations at 2K Sports Jason Argent confirmed on a conference call earlier today.

"We are not doing a Wii U version this year," Argent said. "The decision was made internally." Argent added studio didn't have enough resources to pursue a Wii U port while also developing for next-generation consoles. Though next-generation and current generation versions of NBA 2K14 will have "some overlap," they will be "distinct."

"The common thread, of course, is the game first and foremost is based on simulation basketball," Argent said. "Both current and next-gen will be distinct, unique experiences."

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams spins to PSN this month

Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams hits PSN this month
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is due out on PlayStation Network "later this month," Black Forest Games announced on the PlayStation Blog. This is a delay from an initial launch window of March; Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams landed on XBLA on March 20, and the PSN version was slated to hit "a few days later."

Not to worry, though – we found Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams on PC to be beautiful and challenging, and absolutely worth a history embroiled in scandal and bankruptcy. It should be worth a few extra months to play it on PSN.

Diablo 2 designer brings ChronoBlade to browsers, Ouya, iOS, Android

NWay, a studio founded by Grand Theft Auto creator Dave Jones and former Realtime Worlds president Tony Harman, is bringing a new action RPG called ChronoBlade to browsers, Ouya, iOS and Android. To throw another big name onto the pile, the game is being designed by Stieg Hedlund, the designer behind Diablo 2.

A demo should launch on Ouya next week, and an open beta of the browser version is expected to launch later this month. Check out a developer diary after the break.

Microsoft addresses Xbox One Kinect privacy concerns

Microsoft addresses Xbox One Kinect privacy concerns

Addressing recent concerns raised by Germany's federal commissioner for data protection and other sources, Microsoft has detailed how users can maintain their personal privacy when using the Xbox One's motion-sensing Kinect camera.

Emphasizing that "You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear," Microsoft notes that individual user and family privacy settings can be accessed during Xbox One setup or at any time afterward. In addition, the company assures that conversation and other background noise will not be recorded or monitored by Kinect in any way.

"By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup," Microsoft said. "The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you're simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded."

Microsoft also notes that the Kinect can be disabled at any time during console operation, though some games may require the peripheral to be active for certain gameplay features.

While Kinect monitoring will play a key role in certain game types (Microsoft cites exercise apps and multiplayer card games as examples), alternate control schemes for menus and other functions will be available via the Xbox One's controller and connected mobile devices while the Kinect is paused.

"You can play games or enjoy applications that use data, such as videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate and more, but this data will not leave your Xbox One without your explicit permission," Microsoft states.
