Respawn's debut game is 'TitanFall'

First art appears showing former Call of Duty creators' EA action game

TitanFall has been revealed as the debut title from Respawn, the studio formed by key staff from Call of Duty studio Infinity Ward.

The EA-published online FPS, details of which appeared via US mag Game Informer (and NeoGAF), is set to be an Xbox console exclusive, with Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC versions planned for release in spring 2014.

Confirming earlier reports, GI reveals the title is a multiplayer centric shooter featuring "big mech-style walkers" called Titans.

Players can pilot Titans and move with "great agility" in battles against both other mechs and combatants on the ground.

Gameplay is described as strategic, with players surviving longer than in an average Call of Duty match. According to GI, players on the ground are equipped with multiple weapons, can double jump and take town Titans by climbing on board and shooting their "brains".

Maps will be inhabited by both human and AI enemies, the latter of which can be hacked for assistance in battle. Players can even have their own Titan mech follow them and attack opponents, GI says.

Respawn has been working on the project since its formation in 2010, with publishing duties handled by EA.

The developer is targeting PC and next-gen as its main platforms for TitanFall, with the current-gen Xbox 360 version developed by another developer.

Interestingly, the game is powered by Valve's Source engine, which Respawn says it has rewritten for next-gen platforms, saving development time and apparently ensuring 60 frames-per-second.

The developer says it plans to use the cloud computing capabilities of Xbox One for physics and AI calculations in the game.

On its decision to go Xbox console exclusive, Respawn told Game Informer that it felt that adding other platforms would prove too difficult for its relatively small team. However, the studio would be "open" to working on more platforms in the future.

Respawn has pledged to make an appearance at E3 2013 next week, but it's likely we'll know much more about the game before then.

EA's E3 2013 press conference is set for Monday, June 10 at 9pm BST (1pm Pacific).
