Diablo III's auction house 'really hurt the game'
Remember that one time when a guy used Diablo III's real-money auction house to bank a cool $10,000? That apparently wasn't what Blizzard foresaw when creating and implementing the auction house. According to former Diablo III Game Director Jay Wilson, the auction house "really hurt the game."
GDC 2013: James Ohlen on how F2P saved SWTOR
Developers speak most candidly about their games and professions at GDC, and at GDC13, SWTOR's James Ohlen laid out exactly how the game's F2P transition ensured its survival. He also dispels many myths that have built up around the game, explaining exactly what costs so much money in game development -- and what doesn't cost much at all, relatively speaking.
Jet Li: There's 'no good reason to debunk virtual gaming as a sport'
Jet Li may be known for his martial arts prowess, but he's also an avid gamer according to an interview translation at MMO Culture. Li recently attended an Age of Wushu PvP tournament and had some interesting things to say about e-sports and the validity of video gaming as a sport in general.

Blizzard to attend PAX East
Blizzard Entertainment sort of does its own thing these days. The company has the clout to ignore most gatherings outside of the obvious BlizzCon when you consider the sheer size of World of Warcraft and other properties. But it looks as if this year things will be just a little bit different. Blizzard has stated that representatives will be attending this year's PAX East to show something off. And to compound the bafflement, it's not what you'd expect.
Massively's comprehensive preview of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Final Fantasy XIV is doing something that has never been done before. After launching to poor reception, the MMO appointed a new producer and director, Naoki Yoshida, who has been working tirelessly for two years to rebuild the game from the ground up. The launch version shut its servers down in November of last year, and since then players have been eagerly awaiting the release of the game's revitalized relaunch, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
Celebrate RIFT's second anniversary with the Carnival of the Ascended
What's a party without a dragon piñata or two? Luckily, RIFT fans won't have to find out as the annual Carnival of the Ascended will have those and plenty more for revelers joining in the game's second anniversary celebration. But the carnival -- with its games of skill, pie-stomping contests, and special anniversary cape -- is not the only goody in today's 2.2 update. Besides the previously revealed features, PvP gets a tier 2 attunement of war. Want to see what awaits in the update? Watch the trailer!
SOE lawyering up in its fight against PlanetSide 2 cheaters
SOE president John Smedley took to Reddit yesterday to elaborate on the firm's banning policy as it relates to PlanetSide 2. Smedley also says that the cat-and-mouse routine is here to stay. "The fight against cheaters is not a war we will ever be finished with," he said, before explaining that the reason it takes longer to ban cheaters than some honest players might like is because the devs "don't want to falsely accuse people without solid proof."

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane spoke with Kotaku recently and had some things to say about Project Copernicus, 38 Studios' would-have-been Kingdoms of Amalur MMO. He was the project's art director and says he really thought that it "was going to raise the bar." He remains hopeful that, in time, somebody will "be smart enough" to come in, sweep up the pieces of the unfinished MMO, and make something of it.

Star Wars: The Old Republic's upcoming expansion, Rise of the Cartel, will feature the first implementation of same-gender romances in the game. ArenaNet Game Director Colin Johanson took to the company's blog to talk about their game plan for 2013. Johanson kicked things off by dropping the fact that Guild Wars 2 has now surpassed three million copies sold. New events, polishing PvP, and giving guilds some love are all on the agenda for ArenaNet.
Diablo III's Jay Wilson steps down as game director
It's hard to imagine working on the same game for seven years, but for Diablo III's Jay Wilson, that was his reality. The game director won't be making it eight, however, as Wilson is stepping down to move to another position in Blizzard. Wilson stressed that the ongoing development of Diablo III will "carry forward as normal" and that he'll remain available to the team for consultation and advice.

But that may not be the case. According to rumors collected by fans, Titan may indeed be a spinoff of an existing IP and might even be aimed at the console market.

He said that arena combat put too much of a focus on class balance that the team doesn't want.

Did SWTOR make things worse by going F2P?
Star Wars: The Old Republic has caught a lot of heat over its approach to F2P gaming. EVE Online is well known for its sandbox gameplay and ruthless citizens, with monumental kills and record-breaking scams popping up year after year. Earlier this week, player "stewie Zanjoahir" reportedly lost over 213,000,000,000 ISK when he tried to transport a huge cache of valuable blueprints in a tiny, unfitted frigate. Blizzard's Pardo: Single-player games are an endangered species
Blizzard big cheese Rob Pardo recently revealed his doubts about the future of single-player games in a wide-ranging interview with GamesIndustry.biz. The interview delves into the pervasive social connectivity inherent in many current-gen games, and it also touches on everything from cloud gaming to monetization and business models. Pardo says he's a fan of game designers dictating the monetization models rather than leaving it up to a producer or an executive.
Ten things to do in City of Heroes before it's gone
NCsoft is pulling the plug on City of Heroes come the end of November, and the genre is faced with the loss of yet another pioneering and ostensibly profitable MMO long before its time. Before the game is gone forever, it's worth experiencing the MMO that many have loved since before the launch of World of Warcraft.
League of Legends cheating controversy puts $2,000,000 on the line
The competitive e-sports scene has exploded in the past two years, with top MOBA teams competing for prizes of up to an incredible $1,000,000 US from a single tournament. The crowd attending last week's event in Los Angeles got front row seats to see the game's best teams battle it out over a total of $2,000,000 US in prize money, and with so much money on the line, it's no surprise that accusations of cheating have already surfaced.

ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2 launched recently and the game hit 400,000 concurrent users before the game even officially launched -- all 400,000 of those players coming from the pre-order head start event. But general manager Matt Bromberg doesn't seem to share those opinions. When asked in a recent interview whether the conversion will make the game more money in the long run, Bromberg replied in extremely uncertain terms: "I don't know."

Guild Wars 2's Sanctum of Rall shard named after late gamer

Rall was a member of the Gaiscioch gaming community and was renowned for his calm battlefield leadership in Warhammer Online and RIFT.

Torchlight assets allegedly stolen by Chinese MMO

TERA guild farms itself for political gain, playerbase outraged
TERA's endgame political system features something called a Vanarch, a player-elected representative. Vanarchs can impose taxes, toggle PvP on or off, and generally meddle in the affairs of other players. En Masse recently adjusted the system to allow Vanarchs to rise to power through guild-vs.-guild combat. In doing so, it cleared the way for mega-guilds to split in two and farm their way to political office.
