Metro: Last Light review: red scare

There's more character and nuance in Metro: Last Light Metro: Last Light expands the world of post-apocalyptic Moscow introduced in Metro 2033. Humans have been driven to the subway tunnels to escape a surface scarred by radiation and populated by vicious, mutated animals. At the end of the last game, protagonist Artyom used a newly-recovered missile silo to wipe out a mysterious race of psychic beings known as the Dark Ones. Last Light finds Artyom wracked by guilty nightmares until he discovers that a single Dark One survived the attack. The end goal is set early on, but Last Light's plot swerves again and again right up to its last hour. Life in Metro exists within the delicate balance of four factions — the capitalist Hansa, the communist Red Line, the fascist Reich, and the...

Metro: Last Light first-week retail sales eclipse lifetime US totals for Metro 2033

Metro: Last Light launched to critical acclaim earlier this month, and 4A Games' post-apocalyptic shooter has also proved to be a commercial success worldwide, said publisher Deep Silver today. In Last Light's first week on store shelves, its sales in the U.S. surpassed the lifetime sales numbers for Metro 2033 retail copies in the country. And globally, Deep Silver sold more copies of all versions of Last Light — all platforms, both digitally and at retail — in its first week of release than in the first three months of release for Metro 2033. That includes the well-performing Windows PC version, which outsold the PC version of Metro 2033 by a factor of three during its first week. Deep Silver did not provide specific sales numbers, however. "4A Games are honored by the...

Metro: Last Light dev says conditions weren't ideal, 'talent and relentlessness' drove team

4A Games creative director Andrew "Prof" Prokhorov responded earlier today to former THQ president Jason Rubin's story about the studio's working conditions, telling Polygon the team behind Metro: Last Light is driven by "talent and relentlessness" rather than its resources. In a statement sent to Polygon, Prokhorov said Rubin was the only THQ president to ever visit the Ukranian office and provide feedback on its projects, adding that the development team supports Rubin. "For the last couple of months before the THQ bankruptcy we have been working together with Jason," Prokhorov told us. "Need to mention, for the last 10 years of working with THQ (including STALKER time), he was the only THQ president who was visiting our office, sending us feedback as to game improvements,...

4A Games overcame poor conditions, hurdles in obtaining hardware during development of Metro: Last Light

Ukrainian developer 4A Games overcame a number of hardships and hurdles in the development of Metro: Last Light, including poor and cramped working conditions, struggles to obtain hardware and armed thugs, according to a report by former THQ president Jason Rubin on GamesIndustry.biz. According to Rubin, the budget 4A had for Last Light was "less than some of its competitors spend on cut scenes." 4A's development team and office are also smaller than those for most AAA titles, Rubin said, and the production team "sat on folding wedding chairs, literally elbow to elbow at card tables in what looks more like a packed grade school cafeteria than a development studio." "Let's be honest: 4A was never playing on a level field," Rubin wrote. If 4A needed another dev kit or more powerful PC,...

Metro: Last Light for Windows PC receiving custom FOV 'in the next few days'

4A Games intend to release a Metro: Last Light update for Windows PC within the next few days that will provide players with Field of View customizations, according a post on the game's Steam community page. Although a FOV slider came at the request of players, 4A Games noted that there were valid reasons to keep a fixed FOV, stating the 3D elements like weapon ammo and watch needed to remain visible. "In addition, all the game's first-person cut scenes and cinematics and each and every animation involving Artyom's hands — idle weapon animations, reloads, ladder climbing, melee attacks etc, — were created assuming the same, fixed field of view," the update said. "Changing the FOV would break all the cut-scenes and animations — you would be able to see inside Artyom's arms, or...

Metro: Last Light on Steam includes digital copy of 'Metro 2033' novel

Metro: Last Light buyers who activate their Windows PC copies on Steam will receive a free digital copy of Dmitry Glukhovsky's Metro 2033, the novel upon which 4A Games' 2010 game of the same name was based, publisher Deep Silver announced today. Glukhovsky originally published the post-apocalyptic science-fiction novel in his native Russian in 2005; the English version of the book was released in the U.S. at the same time as the THQ-published video game. The novel spawned an extended universe with dozens of stories authored by other writers, as well as a direct sequel, Metro 2034, penned by Glukhovsky himself and published in Russia in 2009. Glukhovsky's two Metro novels have sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. Metro: Last Light is 4A Games' sequel to its Metro 2033 game. Last...

Metro: Last Light development wasn't affected much by THQ transition, says Deep Silver

Metro: Last Light developer 4A Games has "not lost too much time on the development of the game" as a result of the transition from THQ to the Metro franchise's new owner, Deep Silver, the latter company said in an interview with VG247. Deep Silver's parent company, Koch Media, acquired the Metro IP for $5.8 million in January at THQ's first bankruptcy auction, and also picked up Saints Row developer Volition for $22.3 million. The publisher will lead all future development on both franchises. "Obviously the release date has been pushed back a little bit as the studio re-engages with a new publisher and tries to figure out QA, submissions and all the stuff you have to do behind the scenes," said Huw Beynon, global brand manager at Deep Silver, to VG247. THQ had planned to launch Last...
