BioShock Infinite review: above and below

Pop culture references, sinister whispers, and dizzying heights make Columbia disorienting BioShock Infinite immediately disoriented me as it disorients player character Booker. There's a clear effort to play with any expectations of setting and content through moments of humanity and horror, wonder and ugliness. Irrational quickly establishes some basic ideas of what the world of Columbia and BioShock Infinite is. Almost as quickly, it peeled at the edges of my understanding of that world. Pop culture references and vague allusions to preconceptions formed from past games in the franchise create an uneasy tension, but more importantly, this atmosphere made me desperate to search everywhere for any hint of an explanation as to what made Columbia tick, how it got where it was and where...

Take-Two CEO looks to efficiency and marketing during the next-gen transition

Take-Two Interactive sees a combination of quality titles, operating efficiency and marketing as the pillars of success and profitability during the costly transition to next-gen consoles, CEO Strauss Zelnick said in an earnings call today. In response to a question about the increasing development expenses for next-generation consoles, he acknowledged that new platforms have been historically synonymous with increased costs, but said that Take-Two's efficiency can help mitigate the disruption. "One of the three tenets of our strategic approach here is efficiency, and we aim to be the most efficient company in the business," Zelnick said. "And that includes development spending, so that's a major area of focus to us. "Our goal is to deliver the highest quality titles and to market...

BioShock Infinite commercial brought Elizabeth to life with 3D scanner and a cosplayer

BioShock Infinite developer Irrational Games used a 3D scanner and the Russian cosplayer Anna Moleva to create the trailer that premiered in March during AMC's The Walking Dead, VentureBeat reports. Irrational hired Moleva late last year after she posted cosplay photos of herself as Elizabeth online. To create the commercial, the developer used the handheld EVA Scanner, manufactured by Artec, to capture Moleva's facial expressions for the commercial. "It's actually amazing how dedicated these game developers are about making their characters as believable as possible," Artec's development director Anna Zevelyov told VentureBeat. You can check out the CG version of Moleva in the trailer above. For more on the game, be sure to check out Polygon's BioShock Infinite review.

BioShock Infinite DLC could include a new AI companion

BioShock Infinite's first downloadable content pack could introduce a new AI companion character, as hinted at by 2K Games senior animator Michael Shahan's LinkedIn profile. Shahan's experience includes an entry for "BioShock Infinite DLC1," under which he lists animation and R&D; for "a new AI companion character." It's unclear if this new character would replace the game's current companion, Elizabeth, for a short time or simply act as an addition. We've contacted 2K for comment and will update accordingly. A season pass for BioShock Infinite is currently available for $19.99 and grants buyers access to three additional content packs. DLC is expected to add additional story material, weapons and skills. BioShock Infinite launched for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC March 26....

Japan Review Check: Game & Wario, Dragon's Dogma, Tomb Raider

A quick look at the highlights among the games coming out in Japan this coming week, courtesy the review pages of Famitsu magazine: Game & Wario (8/8/7/8, 31 out of 40 points): This Wii U minigame complication came out on March 28, but โ€” as with a lot of WiiU titles โ€” Famitsu didn't publish their review until pretty well after the game hit stores. One wonders if that has anything to do with the general disappointment that seeps through most of the reviewers' text blurbs. "Only four out of the 16 games included are multiplayer," wrote editor Atsuhiro Fujiwara, "which may not feel like enough for some people. However, each game gets harder and offers up new gimmicks the more you get into them, so it's all pretty enjoyably. The game where you have to draw pictures based on topics...

BioShock Infinite VP of development Rod Fergusson leaving Irrational Games

Fergusson says that while he is still at the company he is in the process of working through the transition and hasn't yet determined where he will go next. "During my departure from Epic, I learned that Irrational was in need of a 'closer' to help finish BioShock Infinite," he wrote to Polygon. "I've been striving for better storytelling in the games I've worked on and I saw this as a great opportunity to learn from Ken and his team on how to build a truly story-driven game. "I am very proud of the work that I did and of the team and what they were able to accomplish on Infinite. Now with the game shipped successfully, I've done what I set out to do here and now I'm looking forward to the next chapter in my life and career." Fergusson joined Irrational Games last August as the...

BioShock Infinite alternate covers now available

BioShock Infinite developer Irrational Games released a group of alternate covers for the game today, giving players the opportunity to replace the Booker DeWitt box art and its Songbird reverse cover with artwork of their choosing. Irrational ran a poll in December in which fans voted on six alternate covers, with the winner set to be included in all copies of the game on the flip side of the default artwork. A red-orange cover featuring the Songbird, a mechanical creature that pursues the protagonists, won the poll with 38 percent of the vote, but Irrational said at the time that it would eventually release all the possible choices and a few others. Eight different alternate covers are now available on the BioShock Infinite website, along with instructions on how to properly print...

The available field of view slider can be found in the game's options setting; however, it only decreases or increases the title's field of view by 15 percent from its default value of 70 degrees. A workaround is available in the meantime, as discovered by users, and is as follows: Navigate to %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Games\BioShock Infinite\XGame\Config\. BioShock Infinite is technically playable on PS Vita through Remote Play

While BioShock Infinite does not officially support Remote Play via PlayStation Vita devices, gamer John Trevor has used custom firmware installed on his PlayStation 3 to provide a go-around. The video demonstrates that it is indeed technically feasible to play the game on PS Vita, despite developer Irrational Games having no current plans to port the title to the handheld device. According to Trevor, it is possible to rip Infinite to the internal hard drive of the PS3 using various custom firmware, followed by assigning buttons to the PS Vita. The, y'know, legality of this is questionable the say the least. Trevor adds that it is equally possible for Sony to ban accounts on the basis of this. Developer Ken Levine has spoken publicly about his interest in developing for PlayStation...
