Published by Sony Online Entertainment (a Sony branch distinct from Sony Computer Entertainment, which handles PlayStation) DC Universe Online launched in 2009 for PC and PlayStation 3, marking one of the first appearances of an MMO on a console.

Speaking to NowGamer, Liberty said that the majority of the DC Universe Online player base is on PlayStation 3.

"We proved that we could get a full-featured MMO onto the PS3 and that it could be very successful," he said. "The majority of our player base is on the PS3, and we get thousands of new players each day."

On the topic of MMOs on next-gen consoles, Liberty said the PlayStation 4 holds a lot of promise. "I would expect that, with all of the amazing features that have been announced for the next PlayStation, that it will be a great platform for MMOs," he said.

Liberty also said that Sony Online Entertainment has established a good working relationship with its console counterpart. "They've become a great partner, and are genuinely interested in effecting change that will make their platforms work better for free-to-play titles," he said.

Sony Online Entertainment's last major release was PlanetSide 2. There have been rumours that PlanetSide 2 may eventually release for PlayStation 4.

PlayStation 4 is due for release in November 2013. More announcements are expected at Sony's E3 2013 showcase next Monday.
