Thief trailer reminds us that stealing is Garrett's way of life

In the E3 2013 trailer for Thief, released today by publisher Square Enix, Garrett, the series' protagonist, explains his one-track mind when it comes to larceny. "Stealing is my way of life; it sets me free in the night," says Garrett in the trailer, which contains no gameplay footage. "Every rivet and stitch lets me find what I desire. The cloth that hides me, the tools that arm me, all lead to that priceless moment." Garrett's skills and equipment, he points out, also allow him to escape just when you think you've got him in your grasp. Thief, a reboot of the long-running stealth franchise, is in development at Eidos Montreal and set for release in 2014 on Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Polygon reported in April that problems at the studio were impeding the game's...

The Xbox One controller is the result of 200 prototypes based on an analysis of the previous Xbox 360 controller and 20 research studies conducted using over 500 participants, with the results of this research now detailed on Xbox Wire. The new controller features four vibration motors that are placed behind each trigger and in each grip. Developer Turn 10 Studios plans to make use of this in the upcoming Forza Motorsport 5 to provide players with feedback if tires break traction from over-accelerating, while chassis rumble will convey impacts and surface irregularities such as cobblestone. The Xbox One controller will also see an improved data transfer rate between the controller and console that will allow for higher fidelity audio between headsets for chat over Xbox live. A new...

Kinect on Xbox One will not record or upload your conversations, Microsoft says

Xbox One's Kinect camera and microphone will not record or upload your conversations, Microsoft says in a newly published document detailing privacy concerns on the console that requires the camera accessory to be plugged in. "You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear," Microsoft says. "By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. When Xbox One is on and you're simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded." Microsoft adds that Xbox One owners are "in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused." "If you don't want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. When the system is off, it's only...

Xbox One publishers decide whether games can be resold

Publishers will be the ones who decide whether or not to allow Xbox One games to be resold or traded though there will be no "platform fees," Microsoft announced today. The company also said the console will not support game rentals, but that it is "exploring the possibilities." The announcement confirms Polygon's report from last month in which our sources indicated Microsoft would not charge a fee for playing used games. Disc-based games can be traded in and resold at retailers like GameStop for cash or in-store credit, and Microsoft said it will "not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers or consumers for enabling transfer of these games." The Xbox One also lets users give disc-based titles to friends by transferring the game's license, as long as the person has been on...

Xbox One to perform online checks every 24 hours, every hour if playing on separate console

The Xbox One will need to be connected to the internet every 24 hours when playing games on your home console, or every hour when accessing your digital library from a different console, Microsoft announced today. On an explanatory page posted on Xbox Wire, the system's heretofore confusing online requirements were cleared up. Each game you own is digitally installed to your account using cloud services. Every 24 hours, an online check is required to ensure that you still own the license for the copy of the game you're playing. You can also access your account and its associated games on a friend's console, but online checks are performed every hour when attempting to play remotely in this manner. The policy lines up with what Polygon heard from our sources shortly after the console's...

NBA Live 14 exclusive to PS4 and Xbox One

NBA Live 14 will be exclusive to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; it won't be released on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, reports GamesIndustry International. According to executive producer Sean O'Brien, who worked on the last game in the series that publisher Electronic Arts actually shipped โ€” 2009's NBA Live 10 โ€” the previous generational shift caused a "hiccup" in the NBA Live franchise because EA decided to rewrite the game's technology, and the series was never able to recover in the current generation compared to its competitor, 2K Sports' NBA 2K franchise. "2K did a different approach and I think were able to gain significant momentum and overall product parity on us at that time," said O'Brien to GamesIndustry International. "And they continued with a very strong direction, and EA...

Privacy concerns threaten to overshadow Microsoft's new console

During last month's unveiling of the Xbox One on Microsoft's Redmond campus, developers showed off how the Kinect can track eye movement to monitor how attentive a player is, use "blush technology" to monitor a player's heart rate, see movements in the dark and even extrapolate a person's mood by watching their face closely. What Microsoft officials didn't detail, and continue to decline to talk about, is exactly how that data will be used and if any of it will leave a player's home to either be processed by Microsoft's cloud service or collected for other reasons. While Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 also has a camera, it is not required for the console to work, Sony officials told Polygon. Because the Xbox One will also deliver ads, stream movies and provide cable television access,...

Harmonix makes players musical magicians in Fantasia: Music Evolved

Fantasia: Music Evolved was recently shown at a pre-E3 event where Disney Interactive's executive producer, Chris Nicholls, explained that the game is about putting "the power and magic of music in the player's hands ... so rather than sit quietly in a dark theater and admire the creativity of others, now we allow you to step into Mickey's shoes and learn to wield the power of music." Players take on the role of the sorcerer's apprentice, who has been tasked to perform and transform songs in order to bring life to worlds created by the sorcerer Yen Sid. In one of the levels Polygon played, we were taken under the sea into a quiet and abandoned ocean environment devoid of music. It was our job to unlock musical interactions by using gestures and, in doing so, bring life and music back...
