PlayStation 4: All the news, collected

In January, Sony invited press to "see the future" at a New York City event highlighting the PlayStation. That event is tonight at 6 p.m. ET and Polygon will be covering it live from the Manhattan Center. Stick around immediately after the presentation for hours of post-show analysis from the editors.

Sources tell Polygon the event will introduce the company's new console, widely considered to be named the PlayStation 4. Later, a video series explored the "evolution" of the PlayStation business beginning with the PlayStation 1, and images of a new controller leaked with multiple sources confirming their veracity.

PlayStation Plus will have a 'prominent role' on PS4, says Sony

The PlayStation Plus subscription service will have "a prominent role" on PlayStation 4, said Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, in an interview with the PlayStation Blog.

Sony did not highlight PlayStation Plus during its PS4 reveal event last week, but according to Ryan, that doesn't mean it's not going to be a part of the PS4.

Calling the Plus service "a core part of the way forward," Ryan said, "We're not yet in a position to disclose our plans for the future of PlayStation Plus but there will definitely be a prominent role to play for it in the...

The next Killzone aims to prove next-gen gaming's worth

We all watched this spectacle of moving images and an immersive world. We saw some unknown beautiful future city resting on the cusp of cascading waterfalls. The vibrant greens and blues of this world alone set the game apart from the bulk of first-person shooters of this generation.

When natural beauty gave way to manufactured violence, one couldn't help but notice the little things in the bedlam of explosions and gunfire: The leaves swirling against the minutely detailed ground, the trailing tendrils of smoke, the cinder and ash floating in the sky.

Later, when a clutch of reporters...

3D gaming 'not a focus' for PlayStation 4, though it is supported

Despite the push on PlayStation 3, stereoscopic 3D — which traditionally uses 3D glasses to filter offset images to each of the viewer's eyes — is "not a focus" for the PlayStation 4, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told a panel of journalists last week, adding that 3D "was a big thing a couple years ago."

"We made [3D] a big thing, because it was led by [the] consumer electronics side of Sony," Yoshida said. "Now the consumer electronics side of Sony, and all the companies have shifted focus from 3D TVs to something else. So, they're not talking about it. Why are we?"

The PS4 is a dream gaming console, that could be a problem

When Sony laid out the promise of the PlayStation Portable in 2004, it called it the Walkman of the 21st Century, a PlayStation 2 in your pocket. When the company unveiled the PlayStation 3, it talked about gaming across multiple screens, the ability for gamers to buy and sell in-game items and showed off a boomerang-shaped controller.

When those systems hit, they delivered a feast of new playable content and edged forward the boundaries of gaming innovation, but both were shadows of the promises that Sony original made.

Where Sony often promises the heavens, it's typically delivered the...

Sony's Yoshida 'happy to see' some of his games adopt episodic model, praises The Walking Dead

After the company's PlayStation 4 reveal last Wednesday, when it said the new console will allow developers "to explore new business models that offer more flexibility including episodic and free-to-play," there was an opportunity to bring up episodic gaming with Shuhei Yoshida again.

Nearly five years ago, when I last asked Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida about the company's ill-fated episodic series Rat Race, he laughed (a Yoshida trademark) and told me, "You have [a] good memory. Yeah, maybe I talked about episodic games and that's my fault. So, yeah, we stopped it. We...

Tretton stated that pricing and additional details will be made available throughout "several key events between now and the launch date," giving Sony a "nine-to-10" month period to reveal further information about the system. PlayStation 4 is...

PS4 'doesn't support' current-gen DualShock 3 controller, does support PS Move

During last night's PlayStation 4 reveal event, Sony developer Media Molecule demonstrated a tech demo in which players used a PlayStation Move controller to sculpt 3D objects. With Move-like functionality already supported by the new DualShock 4 controller, we asked Sony's Shuhei Yoshida if the PS4 would support the current-gen DualShock 3 controllers the same way it supports the similarly current-gen PS Move controller.

"No, [the PlayStation 4] doesn't support DualShock 3 but it does support PS Move," Yoshida said.

Asked if that policy extends to other Bluetooth-enabled PS3 peripherals...

PS4's AMD semi-custom processing unit detailed

Sony's PlayStation 4 will be powered by a semi-custom AMD accelerated processing unit designed for high-volume media, technology company AMD announced today.

According to AMD, the company utilized the same technology design "roadmap" for its PCs, notebooks and tablets when designing the PS4's APU.

PS4 may support existing digital purchases through cloud, 'We could do so if we choose to,' says Sony

PlayStation 4 will not natively support PlayStation 3 games, including downloadable PlayStation Network games, said Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios during a roundtable interview today. The absence of native compatibility means Sony will need to explore other alternatives for playing current-gen software.

"Unless, somehow, some games work on emulation," Yoshida acknowledged. "The easiest thing, technically, would be to make PS1 games work on PS4 with emulation, but we are not talking about our emulation plans as yet." PS1 games currently run through emulation on the...

PS4 will support 4K for 'personal contents' like photos, but not games

The PlayStation 4 will support media output resolution at 4K for photos and videos but not for games, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed to Polygon this morning.

"The official answer is that the PS4 supports 4K output but for personal contents, like photos or videos. Not games," Yoshida said. "PS4 games do not work on 4K."

When asked if they could support 4K output if the developer was able to justify the increased processing cost, Yoshida explained, "There's a demonstration. Polyphony Digital's Kazunori [Yamauchi] loves these things. He's been using multiple PS3s...

Sony explains why the PS4 was a no-show at its own debut

This week's hours-long PlayStation Meeting gave gamers their first glimpse at the new DualShock 4 controller, detailed the philosophy of the PlayStation 4, showed off a half-dozen games and demoed three new engines.

But there was one glaring omission: The PS4's debut was missing the PS4.

I ran into Shuhei Yoshida, president of Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment, after the show and asked him why the console wasn't shown during the presentation or after.

"We need something to show off later," he said, half kidding.

Will it be shown at E3, I asked.
