Xbox One Controller will last ten years - Microsoft

Can handle 3 million button presses

After subjecting the Xbox One controller to rigorous testing, Microsoft claims it will last ten years.

Accessories and hardware manager for Microsoft, Bob Brown, told Pocket-Lint that the aim was to create a controller that would last ten years - the projected lifespan of the Xbox One.

Brown explains that when testing the Xbox One Controller, "each button gets pressed over and over, between 4-5 times a second," while the thumbsticks are also tested with repeated use.

The test determines not only how the controller can withstand vigorous button mashing, but also whether each button delivers the right result, regardless of how many times it has been pressed.

The controllers are also dropped repeatedly in order to determine shock points, and to ensure the inside is not damaged on collision.

The Xbox One controller has been finalised, however Brown says testing is still ongoing. Currently, the controller can handle over 3 million button presses, which Brown claims is over the target.

During our hands-on with the Xbox One Controller, we said it is the improved force feedback that makes it a "fantastic prospect".

The Xbox One was unveiled in Washington last week, with the live-stream of the event attracting over 8.45 million viewers. Visit our definitive Xbox One guide.
