The UPS Foundation Lends Support to WWF Philippines' Environmental Life Skills Education Program

Manila, July 12, 2012

The UPS Foundation has awarded a US$40,000 grant to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, in support of the non-government organization's environmental life skills education program.

Entitled "Simple Steps for Smarter Living", the program aims to raise awareness among the youth on issues such as climate change and waste management. They will be engaged in taking concrete actions to address these issues and practice sustainable lifestyles. The program consists of three thematic modules on climate change, waste management, and sustainable lifestyles and is expected to be part of a sustained engagement with the partner schools.

The UPS Foundation's support for "Simple Steps for Smarter Living" allows for the program to be implemented in 20 public high schools in key cities throughout the Philippines, namely Manila, Quezon City, Parañaque City, Cebu City, and Davao City—highly urbanized areas that are susceptible to the impacts of climate change and improper waste management. The program is expected to mobilize 250 teachers and coordinators and 200 volunteers in order to reach 14,000 first-year high school students.

The grant also provides teachers and coordinators with the necessary manuals, lesson plans, activity sheets, monitoring and evaluation kits, and information, education, and communication (IEC) materials.

"Our support to WWF Philippines is aligned with one of the four focus areas of The UPS Foundation which is environmental sustainability," said Tim Gohoc, managing director of UPS Philippines. "We believe our support to this program will lead to the development of a generation of young leaders that will promote sustainability. Sustainability is not just something we think of as a business entity, but we also work with organizations and communities in order to realize a brighter future that is shared by all."

Early this year, The UPS Foundation awarded a US$10,000 grant to WWF Philippines for My1Thing, an initiative to promote public awareness and understanding on the impacts of climate change.
