Journal site Xanga tries to fend off an impending shutdown with fundraising drive

via farm5.staticflickr.com

It's a sad day for the old internet. Xanga — which has long tagged behind LiveJournal as a journaling platform — is running out of time: in a blog post, the team behind it said they'll be forced to shut the site down if they can't raise $60,000 by July 15th. "The status quo is no longer...

Camino browser ends development after ten years

camino (from OStatic)

The open source web browser Camino is no longer in development, after landing on Macs about a decade ago. Camino's developers felt that it had fallen behind modern browsers like Chrome and Firefox, and that continuing to slowly develop the browser would lead to serious security issues for its users. Though Camino's marketshare hasn't been significant in some time, it originally served as one of the limited options that Mac users had for surfing the web. At first, Camino was one of the few browsers that embraced OS X's aesthetics and services, but over the years its development slowed. While the announcement that Camino's development is over was only made yesterday, the browser's final update was back in March of last year.

Lists might not be Twitter’s most popular feature, but for those who use them, the hard limit of 20 different groups could be an aggravating roadblock on the way to an efficient, compartmentalized stream of tweets. Thankfully, Twitter announced that it has increased the limit to 1,000 lists, each of which can include up to 5,000 accounts (up from 500), so even the most hardcore users should be able to make do. The 20-list cap had been in place since the feature launched in 2009, so...

Tumblr launches first in-stream sponsored posts on web following mobile rollout

tumblr web ad

Just over one month ago, Tumblr introduced its first in-stream mobile ads, and today, it's bringing the same ads to its website. The "sponsored posts," as they're called, often take the form of Tumblr-friendly images like GIFs of a scene from The Great Gatsby or an animation of a GE jet engine. The sponsored posts, denoted by animated dollar signs ($) in their top-right corners, have already racked up 10 million likes and reblogs on mobile...

Tweetbot for Mac beats Twitter yet again with new media timeline view

tweetbot mac media view

Today Tweetbot for Mac was updated to include a new media timeline view that turns your feed into a stream of images and videos from the people you follow — a view popularized by apps like Instagram. A "media-only" Twitter view has popped up in mobile apps like Twittelator Neue and Tweetbot for iOS, but the feature really shines on desktop, where you have a consistent internet connection and lots of screen real estate. The new view can be...
