Patch 5.3 PTR: PvP Power percentage nerfs

Patch 53 PTR PvP Power percentage nerfs
The latest PTR build has brought with it a change to PvP Power, as MMO-Champion reported earlier today. The change was to the amount of points of PvP Power that it takes to push your percentage up by 1%. The number of points for a 1% increase in PvP Power went from 265 to 400. Currently, if you have, say, 12,000 PvP Power, on live servers you would get around +45% damage from PvP Power, and 22.6% additional healing from PvP Power.

On the PTR, however, 12,000 PvP Power will only give you an extra 30% damage from PvP Power, and, at current numbers, which are still fairly fluid, around 30% extra healing. Of course, don't forget with those healing numbers that Battle Fatigue has been increased to a proportionate level.

This change was a little surprising, so I did what I always do now, tweeted Senior PvP Designer Brian Holinka to get his input on the change. He tweeted the following shortly thereafter:

Holinka makes some excellent points. This is a great way to reduce the power of sockets, and to bring down the burst which has caused such problems this season, as well as taking healing down in proportion. So what's all the fuss about? Well, players are worried that, with the resilience changes, this will make PvE gear a more equal or even superior choice for PvE come patch 5.3. And it's a reasonable concern. While it's great that PvE gear will be viable for PvP, PvP gear should still be the out-and-out best.

I discussed the comparisons between various levels of PvE gear and PvP gear in an earlier article, but this change may well alter these numbers. Both Cynwise and Eldacar, PvP maths masters, are looking at the numbers, so we'll have to wait and see the result. Preliminary reports from ArenaJunkies look good, still asserting that PvP Power is strong enough to beat PvE gear. Also, I can't help thinking that Holinka and his team have considered this issue. To repeat my earlier message, don't panic!

Do you want to capture flags, invade cities, attack towers, and dominate the enemy for your faction? Do you dream of riding your War Bear with pride? We'll steer you to victory with secrets of Battlegrounds and Arena, prepping you with proven addons and keybindings that win! Send questions or comments to olivia@wowinsider.com.

Breakfast Topic: The best things are above you

Breakfast Topic Look up
It's really easy, both in life and in WoW, to rush by without taking a moment to smell the roses, to survey the beauty that's all around us. I'm as guilty of this as the next person, always hurrying in-game, always trying to get to the next spot, the next level, the next piece of gear, the next round rating number.

So I was on an alt in the Alliance base on Thunder Isle, when I had to alt-tab out to respond to an IM. I then put my laptop down and afk'd, and on my return I was looking at the library you see in the header image. What you might not be able to see is the scholars in the alcoves, reading away. I'd never noticed it before, because all I usually do there is hearthstone and then run straight out the door.

It took me ages to even notice the amazing swirling sky in parts of Pandaria, with its sha-styled tendrils. But what about you, do you look up? You really should. And what are your favorite bits of sky in the game? Your favorite treasures, indoor or out, that you'll miss if you're not glancing occasionally towards the heavens?

BlizzCon Tickets on sale today at 10am PDT

Blizzcon
The last opportunity to purchase tickets for Blizzcon 2013 comes knocking at 10am PDT today. (That's three hours from the time this is published.) The last set, which went on sale at 7pm PDT on Wednesday, sold out at remarkable speed, just as you'd expect for a conference of the huge status and minimal size of BlizzCon.

Do check out WoW Insider's tips to getting yourself ready for the ticket push, and most importantly, don't assume that you can wait five minutes before logging on to obtain a few tickets. These sell out incredibly quickly, and you'll need to be ready to go in advance of the scheduled time, with your finger working that F5 key to destruction so that you can get into the queue in a decent position. Don't alt-tab around, don't get a coffee.

If you can recruit friends, do! Working as a group can be the very best way to try to ensure that you can secure tickets for you and your friends. You'll need a little organization and communication, but it's worth it, this is BlizzCon, people! This time of day is also far more sociable for the EU than the previous time, so bear that in mind when planning your raid on the battle.net site. Pre-pot for this one!

There are also tickets to an exclusive pre-BlizzCon dinner to benefit Children's Hospital of Orange County go on sale Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. PDT. These are more expensive at $500, and do include a ticket to BlizzCon itself. You can visit the Blizzcon Ticket Information Page for more information.

Poll: Do you cheat on your faction?

Poll Do you cheat on your faction
We all know how it starts. A stolen glance across the sands of Silithus. That moment where you eyes meet, a shared second in the Deeprun Tram as you chase your foe back down the tunnel with your finger hovering over the Hammer of Wrath, but hesitate to hurl it home. You know your past, your history, your ambitions, you're a draenei, you're a member of the Alliance, it's all so clear. But somewhere, somewhere there's a longing for something more. Something different. Something... green.

And before you know it, you're being catapulted from Kezan into a new world, a world of orcs and blood elves, of trolls and tauren, of bloodlust rather than heroism. It's new, it's exciting, but is it anything more than just a fleeting visit? Can you really stay in this place, with the in-fighting and the slums and the ramshackle, riotous city of Orgrimmar as your home?

Have you ever cheated on your faction? Been deepsing with the enemy? You're far from alone. It's certainly safe to say that some players are like swans: when it comes to factions, they mate for life. But others are like sparrows, flitting from faction to faction. If you're a sparrow rather than a swan, are your dalliances with the dark side flippant flings, or full-blown affairs? Are you truly bi-factional, or will one always take precedence, always be your home and your heart?

Do you cheat on your faction?

Ghostcrawler on the lessons learned in Mists

Ghostcrawler on the lessons learned in Mists
Long-term WoW Insider readers will likely remember the post-Cataclysm dissection where the developers discussed the mistakes they had made and how they planned to rectify them for future expansions. Well, a twitter user has asked Blizzard Lead Systems Designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street the same question, for Mists of Pandaria, and Ghostcrawler had the following to say in reply:

Firstly, one of the great things about Ghostcrawler is how readily he owns up to the team's mistakes here. There's no shame in getting things wrong, but maintaining that you're infallible is both irritating and generally untrue.

Mists' talent system revamp: Hit or miss?

Now that it's been a while a look at Mists' talent system
We've had the new talent system now for eight months, and it's had time to settle in, so it seems that it's an appropriate time to see whether it has been a success in its objectives, to assess the pros and cons of the new system.

In case you forgot, Wrath of the Lich King featured 71 talent points, which were distributed over three trees, resulting in some entertaining builds, and no requirement to place the last talent in the tree. The Burning Crusade was similar, but with 10 fewer points, and slightly smaller trees as a result. By the time Cataclysm rolled around, adding an additional five levels, there was concern about this system being bloated, daunting, and unnecessarily complex. So, with Cataclysm came a simplification: 31-point talent trees. At the time, Zarhym explained the change as follows:

Zarhym
We'd rather have a simpler design with a lot of depth, than a complicated but shallow design. The goal for Cataclysm remains to remove a lot of the passive (or lame) talents, but we don't think that's possible with the current tree size. To resolve this, we're reducing each tree to 31-point talents.

Cata also added a requirement that you get to the end talent of your main tree before moving onto the next, effectively removing the hybrid builds that had occasionally surfaced. But that change clearly wasn't enough, as most readers of WoW Insider will recall, there was a further revamp at the start of Mists, moving to the current system. It was a far more drastic change, too, with the disappearance of the talent trees we'd grown used to seeing. But was it a change for the better?

Breakfast Topic: What made you choose your class?

Breakfast Topic What made you choose your class
A little while back, someone asked me why I ended up playing a shaman. I'll give you a brief run-down of the events that led me to a little red-headed dwarf... and the other shaman!

My first character was a paladin. I'd been told to play one by the people who talked me into playing WoW in the first place, and I kind of liked it. As much as anything, it was a sentimental attachment. My friend Chris had made the character for me, and named it, and my friend Mark had taught me roughly how to play it. I was still kind of a noob, when I was leveling my way through a zone and saw what I now know was a shaman. I'd been trying to kill some mobs, and having a hard time, partly because I was new to the game, and partly because I was specced into holy.

This shaman planted their totems and unleashed a torrent of lightning bolts into one of these tricky mobs, and it died before it even got to them. I was impressed! I didn't even know, at the time, what that class was, but a brief description to my guild-mates soon clarified it. I decided at that point that my next class would be one of those, and rolled one the same day. And somewhere along the way I lost the bug for massive DPS and started healing.

That's me, but what about you? What made you choose your class? Was it seeing another? A feeling of personal identity? A preference from previous games?

The wait continues for Pierre and the Skyclaw

The wait continues for Pierre and the Skyclaw
The mystery of Pierre and the Sky Claw continues. These creations burst onto the scene in the patch 5.2 PTR patch notes back in January, when we were enthralled by Pierre's cooking capabilities, and the Sky Claw's two-person mount potential. Engineers were thrilled at their appearance, but alas, it was not to be.

When we last heard from our potent pair, they had been recently removed from patch 5.2, for undisclosed reasons. This last update came our way in early March, and we have had no word since. Until now. Blizzard Lead Content Designer Cory "Mumper" Stockton tweeted the following:

What has happened to Pierre and the Skyclaw? Have we sent out a search party? Are they in Vashj'ir, solving underwater crimes? Is it simply that Lil' Ragnaros is jealous and has banished Pierre to the Elemental Plane, and the Skyclaw is trying to build up the stones to fly down and snatch him out? Or is it possible that something more sinister is afoot...

WoW Insider recently made mention of a new contender for engineers' hearts and pockets, the Bad Robot, due to grace our screens in 'a future patch'. Could it be that the bad robot has lived up to his name and put paid to Pierre and the Skyclaw? Could this be the darkest hour for our dynamic duo? Who will help them now?

Patch 5.3 PTR patch notes for April 22

Patch 53 PTR patch notes for April 22
The latest set of updates to the latest build landed on the Blizzard blog last night, and there are some more pretty big changes coming in on the PTR. As well as the usual class balance fixes, which bring some more number balancing to Atonement for discipline priests, as well as to paladins' Battle Healer, there are some fairly notable quality of life changes being made to the older content in this expansion.
  • Experience needed to increase from level 85 to level 90 has been reduced by 33%.
  • Players no longer need to have defeated Grand Empress Shek'zeer to enter the Terrace of Endless Spring in Normal difficulty.
And what's more, for current content, there is a substantial change to the acquisition quest for Mogu Runes of Fate.
  • Reduced the number of Lesser Charms of Good Fortune needed for the Mogu Runes of Fate weekly quest to 50, down from 90.
The experience nerf and the Lesser Charm change are the most interesting here, and it seems like Blizzard might be rethinking some of their earlier ideas on how hard the grind has to be in order to encourage players to stay and level their alts. What do you think?

Hit the break for the full notes.

Breakfast Topic: What makes WoW a great game?

Breakfast Topic What makes WoW a great game
You'll probably say I'm being paid off by Blizzard or something (I wish I was), that I'm a sell-out and shouldn't be trusted, and should be thrown to the dogs and such, but I love WoW. Of all the games I've played in my life, WoW is the one that's become an obsession. It's become a career even, it's now not just what I do in my spare time, but what I do in my work time, too. And I love it.

I was chatting with my friend Missy, a huge lover of lore, and we were discussing how different our gameplay experiences were. I rush through content, I'm all about the end-game, and getting there was quickly as possible. In scenarios, I get distracted by the killing, I just want to make with the stabby or the zappy or the choppy, and use my character's abilities in the most efficient and intelligent way I can to get the job done. I miss huge chunks of story because I'm just not looking out for it. And Missy plays completely differently, always with an eye on the story, always with an eye on the quest text and the NPC dialog and all the rest. I haven't watched a skippable cutscene in a really long time. And our own lore lovers here at WoW Insider are just the same, I'm sure Sally despairs of me. I know Anne does.

But we all love this game. There's something there for all of us, and for the hardcore raiders, the RPers, the people who never have max-level characters at all, the pet battlers, the people who only have an hour or two every third wednesday, they've all got a place in Azeroth.

And that's why WoW is a great game, in my book. But that's my book. What do you think?
