The Denpa Men 2 hits 3DS eShop on May 30

The Denpa Men 2 eyes May 30 launch on 3DS eShop in US
Nintendo of America has revealed a May 30 launch date for Genius Sonority's The Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves on the 3DS eShop. No price is listed on the Nintendo page yet, though we can't imagine cost will stray too far from the original Denpa Men's $10 asking price.

The Denpa Men 2 is the sequel to the charming RPG in which players find and recruit hidden characters in the real world using the 3DS's camera. Denpa Men exist to raid dungeons and, this time, battle other players online.

Capcom encases 3DS, 3DS XL in vintage Mega Man look

Capcom store celebrates Mega Man with 3DS case
Capcom has taken part in an ongoing observation of Mega Man's 25th anniversary with statues, soundtrack releases, USB drives, and even an officially promoted fan game. As we stretch into year two of the 25th anniversary celebration, Capcom is producing a Mega Man-themed case for 3DS and 3DS XL.

At first blush, outfitting a 3DS in Mega Man garb seems like a cruel tease, after the death of Mega Man Legends 3. But Capcom is releasing all of the NES Mega Mans on the handheld's Virtual Console (it's up to 4 now), making an NES-style Mega Man motif appropriate.

The case will be on sale at Comic-Con, as well as at Capcom's online store.

PSA: 3DS XL free game promo ends today

A quick reminder to prospective 3DS XL buyers: Today is the last day you can snag a free game with a new 3DS XL. The catch is that you'll have to buy and register either Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon in order to do so. Once you've registered both your 3DS XL and either game on Club Nintendo, you can choose a free download of Super Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone!, Star Fox 64 3D, or Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive!

One word of warning if you plan to buy the downloadable versions of either Luigi's Mansion or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Be sure to link your 3DS XL to your Club Nintendo account before downloading either game. The deal applies to any 3DS XL purchased on or after February 14, 2013.

Rex Rocket Kickstarter looks pretty mega, man

What's that, another pixel-art game inspired by the likes of Mega Man and Metroid on Kickstarter? And why not! Rex Rocket tells the story of ... Rex Rocket, a war hero aboard the "epic star cruiser" SS Montana. His days of combat over, he's now saddled with the mundane job of ferrying a bunch of scientists and "Terra-Oozlings" to the Washington solar system. Naturally, things don't go according to plan. Long story short, Rex soon finds himself battling escaped Oozlings, haywire robots and the SS Montana's damaged computer.

The game features plenty of weapons, exploration, puzzles, platforming, a sweet chiptune soundtrack and lots of enemies. Developers Rob Maher and Tyler Bud are seeking $6,000 to fund the project, with a planned release in January 2014. Rex Rocket is guaranteed on PC, though the duo hopes to port it to pretty much everything, including Mac, Wii U, 3DS, Vita, Xbox Live Indie Games, iOS and Ouya.

Nintendo is selling refurbished 3DS, DSi through its online store

It's hard to get more credible than "authentic refurbished Nintendo products" from Nintendo's official store. Nintendo of America is selling refurbished 3DS and DSi consoles, starting at $100 for Metallic Rose and Midnight Blue DSi XLs, and $130 for the 3DS in Aqua Blue and Midnight Purple.

Nintendo's blurb says its line represents "the only refurbished products in the market that have been cleaned, tested, and inspected to meet Nintendo's high standards." Well then. The portables have a one year warranty and are guaranteed to work, even if there are any "minor cosmetic blemishes."

Alas, Eurofriends, it seems this one's a NoA thing. "We currently have no plans and have made no announcements for this type of activity in Europe," Nintendo UK told Eurogamer.

Dead Island Riptide surfs the crest of this week's UK charts

Dead Island Riptide is the new chart leader in the UK. Like Dead Island before it, the zombie-stuffed continuation may be critically divisive, but commercially it's doing the business so far. Having said that, Riptide's first week sales come in at less than half of the original's. Dead Island sliced through the 5 million mark for sales earlier this year.

Caught in the high Riptide is Injustice: Gods Among Us; last week's number one washes up this week in number two. Meanwhile, enhanced re-release Dark Arisen also matches its original's first week chart performance, notching third spot just like Dragon's Dogma did. The third of four new releases in this week's top ten is Star Trek; it boldly goes into fourth place. The last top ten debutante is Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins, the 3DS version doing what its sibling failed to; the Wii U version debuted at 12th earlier this year.

Outside of the new releases, this week's musical chairs are very interesting. Tomb Raider continues its impressive run, only down from fourth to fifth. FYI, Square Enix, that's eight weeks it's been in the UK top five, and it's ahead now of BioShock Infinite. After five weeks, Irrational's sky-high shooter is floating just below in sixth. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is another consistent performer, and five weeks in the 3DS game is still haunting the top ten.

Original Shantae wishes to appear on 3DS Virtual Console by June
The original Shantae is on its way to the 3DS Virtual Console at the end of June, developer Wayforward announced. This is the Game Boy Color version of Shantae first launched in 2002 and published by Capcom. Shantae will be available on 3DS eShops in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

A sequel to Shantae, Risky's Revenge, hit DSiWare in 2010 and iOS in 2011, and Wayforward is currently working on a third installment for the 3DS eShop, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. Meanwhile, Wayforward already has its hands full with the remastery of DuckTales, again working with Capcom.

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers cracks Europe this fall

NIS America is bringing Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers to Europe this fall, hot on the heels of the 3DS game finally being localized in North America. The Atlus dungeon crawler, originally released for the Sega Saturn in 1997, will in turn reach Europe for the first time in around a few months time.

NIS America also confirmed to us a concrete European release date for Imageepoch PS3 RPG Time and Eternity: June 28. That matches up with what Amazon's been listing for the region, not for the first time for a NIS America game. With that in mind, don't be surprised if Time and Eternity's "summer" window for North America gets upgraded to July 16.

Mega Man 4 soundtrack blasts onto the Capcom Store

Mega Man 4 soundtrack blasts onto the Capcom Store
Mega Man 4 is available on the 3DS eShop for $5 – but wait, there's more! The soundtrack for Mega Man 4 is out on the Capcom Store today for $9, following in the sound-steps of Mega Man 1, 2 and 3, each released earlier this month. The Mega Man 4 soundtrack includes 66 songs, so it's a doozy.

The soundtrack for Mega Man 5 is up next, coming out in May.

Rumor: Scribblenauts DC comics game in development

Rumor DC super hero Scribblenauts game in development
Scribblenauts Unlimited developer 5th Cell is reportedly working on a DC super hero entry in the write-em-up series, called Scribblenauts Unmasked. According to IGN sources, the game is currently mired in redesign and may even lose the Scribblenauts Unmasked moniker altogether, though the game is assuredly focused on the DC Comics license.

The original design called for a game where Max would embark on adventures to help out DC super heroes, but that may not be indicative of the final product. One scenario detailed includes Max trying to bypass a hungry Killer Croc to infiltrate Wayne Manor through the sewers below. Another anecdote provided presents Max with two seemingly identical police officers, yet one is the villain Clayface and must be discovered.

IGN's sources say the game announcement is due at this year's E3, with PC, Wii U and 3DS being listed as supported platforms.

Miiverse makes its way to 3DS this year

Miiverse makes its way to 3DS this year
The Miiverse is expanding (just like the universe) and is scheduled to launch on the 3DS this year, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced in a financial presentation. Miiverse launched in Bowser browser form yesterday.

"We are also planning to make available a system update for Nintendo 3DS to allow its users to view and post content on Miiverse on the system within this year," Iwata said. Nintendo hopes Miiverse on the 3DS will prompt users to "understand the charm of the other platform, Wii U."

Miiverse was initially announced for the Wii U in June 2012 and launched with that console in November. The newest version of Miiverse is accesible via desktops and smartphone browsers, in beta form, currently allowing users to interact with their friends' feeds. It doesn't yet support creating new posts or new accounts, but Nintendo will "enrich the service incrementally."

Iwata wants the browser Miiverse to also influence user perception of the Wii U: "It will play an important role in having those who do not have Wii U understand the appeal of the platform through Miiverse."

Get Deoxys for Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 next month

Something about Pokemon
The creepy-looking Pokémon Deoxys will be available in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 starting May 8, through a special character distribution online. If you're still playing the trading card game, it's also being released for that in a new "Plasma Freeze" expansion. Are people still playing the TCG?

When Deoxys was first introduced back in 2005, it was revealed as part of a cross-promotion between Pokémon and NASA designed to help teach kids about DNA. Perhaps you didn't realize, when you woke up this morning, that you lived in a world where NASA and Pokémon had collaborated.

Nintendo downloadable game sales more than double this year

Nintendo downloadable game sales more double this year
Wii U sales may be struggling but Nintendo's download business is booming. As part of its financial briefing today, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that the company's downloadable game sales surpassed ¥16 billion ($160.9 million), more than doubling sales of the previous year. Download sales also handily eclipsed the banner year of 2010, when "both the Wii and Nintendo DSi systems were actively used."

Iwata noted that the majority of Nintendo customers have taken their 3DS online. That includes 87 percent of users in Japan and 83 percent in America. Europe's connection rate is significantly lower at 57 percent. The Wii U, meanwhile, has an 80 percent connection rate worldwide.

Iwata also mentioned the surprising viewing habits for the company's Nintendo Direct presentations. For recent presentations, he said, "it became common to see total views for a single video reach five hundred to six hundred thousand in a matter of about 10 days on the Nintendo eShop while they did not show apparent growth on YouTube." In fact, it seems that the eShop is now the most popular source for Nintendo Direct, accounting for "approximately 60 to 70 percent" of total views. That might sound like a surprising statistic, especially given the immense presence of YouTube, but Iwata noted that the eShop appeals to viewers "who do not own their own PCs or smart devices."

Nintendo details its new E3 plans

Nintendo details E3 plans
Nintendo isn't doing the full E3 press conference this year, as revealed last night. In a statement, Nintendo of America explained what its revised plans are, offering details of the two closed events it will host in lieu of a Ravi Drums-enhanced conference.

"Beyond the news that will be communicated through Nintendo Direct videos in the run up to E3, at the show itself we're hosting two smaller events on Tuesday morning before the LACC opens instead of just our traditional one event," Nintendo said. "A media event and a partner presentation will both occur that morning," which is when the press conference would traditionally occur.

The media event will take place at Nintendo's E3 booth before the show, allowing "a small group of media" to play new games. Meanwhile, "at the Nokia theater we'll meet with business partners (retailers, publishers, analysts, etc.) from the NOA territory and discuss our plans for driving the business and providing tailored information that this group finds useful to their operations."

Yes, that's right. Nintendo is still renting out the Nokia Theater, and just putting on a smaller show there. That suggests that either this plan was conceived very recently – after the company had already booked the theater – or that Nintendo is going to try to wow its smaller, focused audience with a big show.

New Nintendo eShop releases: Rayman Legends Challenges, Mega Man 4

New Nintendo eShop releases Rayman Legends Challenges, Mega Man 4
The free Rayman Legends Challenges app launches today on the Wii U eShop. Half demo and half conciliatory gesture, this exclusive app was promised after Ubisoft delayed the Wii U version to prepare a multiplatform release. The full game is due September 3.

On 3DS, the collection of NES Mega Man games grows with Mega Man 4. And Color Commando launches on DSiWare, a puzzle-platformer about placing blobs of paint around a level to neutralize same-color monsters.

GameFly opens Kansas City distribution center

GameFly has opened a distribution center in Kansas City, Missouri, which we believe qualifies as the by-mail game rental services' first location in "the middle." This is the company's sixth distribution center, with other locations in (most recently) Seattle, Austin (not "the middle," but TEXAS!), Tampa, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles.

GameFly recently went through a restructuring, laying off approximately 15 percent of its staff. GameFly members can check the distribution center servicing them by looking at the address on their return mailer.

Nintendo not doing E3 press conference, holding smaller closed events instead

Nintendo not doing E3 press conference, holding smaller closed events instead
In an investor presentation, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced that Nintendo will skip the usual large-scale E3 press conference this year in favor of "a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the U.S. market."

One of these events will be for American distributors, with another closed event "for mainly the Western gaming media." Iwata noted that Nintendo is not planning to announce any new hardware at this E3, with showing off software the main focus.

While Nintendo is dropping a lot of mainstream press attention with this move, it makes a lot of sense for a company with the recent financial history of Nintendo to skip out on some expensive pageantry. Especially when the company makes E3-level announcements monthly, for a tiny fraction of the cost.
