History
Each area of the world has a history and set of significant events that helped shape what it is today. There’s also a rich history behind the people of the world, including their culture and values. History gives us a timeline so we understand its progression of events. Take ancient Greece and Rome. Both were Mediterranean countries, but each had very different terrain. They did have similar ways in which women were treated, along with similar systems of government.
Our section on Biographies includes noteworthy people – both good and bad. Contemporary History looks at recent events that challenge our present. For example: Why does the United States care if North Korea tests missiles? Why are we fighting in Iraq? What is soon to change with our healthcare system?
Latin America and the Caribbean also have a rich historical past. From the conquistadors of the 16th century to the legend of El Dorado, many battles were fought, including the War of the Pacific. It can be disputed when Modern Europe began. Some say it was during the Renaissance, and others believe it started with the Industrial Revolution in England. Do you know who fought the Hundred Years War from 1337-1453? It was France and England. Who took part in the Holy Alliance? It was an agreement signed in 1815 by the King of Prussia and the emperors of Russia and Austria.
The history of the United States and Canada does not go back as far as Europe, but it’s filled with trials and turbulence. Did you know about half of the settlers who landed at Plymouth Rock died from scurvy and exposure? Yes, none of the survivors chose to return with the Mayflower to England. Who were the major figures in early abolitionism? The preaching of Lyman Beecher and Nathaniel Taylor in New England and the religious revivals that began in New York in 1824 under Charles G. Finney created a powerful impulse toward social reforms like emancipating slaves as well as temperance and women’s rights. What was the Canada Act? Also called the Constitutional Act of 1982, it made Canada a fully sovereign state. Did you know the era of good feelings in U.S. history was from 1817-1823?
