Hazel Holme

Official Number
58782

The Hazel Holme was a composite barque (wooden hull, iron beams) built by T.Turnbull at Whitby in May 1870. She was originally named King Arthur, and was managed by her builders until her sale in 1874 to Maryport's Hine brothers (the Holme Line). They renamed her and changed her registry from Whitby to Liverpool. For this firm the vessel traded to Australia and the Far East.

The Hazel Holme was sold by Hine Bros. in 1888 and was re-registered at Valparaiso, Chile. In his Sea Breezes article Alfred Hine wrote that she had been sold to H.Battle in 1887, and that she was wrecked in June 1898.

A later steamship owned by Hine Brothers was also named Hazel Holme. Built by J.L.Thompson (who had built the Brier Holme for Hine Bros.) at Sunderland in 1900, she was the last vessel bought by the Holme Line, and was wrecked in the Bay of Biscay in 1911 (see Source 3).
