UPS Disaster Relief Update

Logistics Emergency Team

  • The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is receiving disaster relief operations support from Logistics Emergency Team private sector companies, including UPS, Agility, and TNT. The WFP is in the lead role in the Global Logistics Cluster's relief efforts in the Philippines in response to the recent flooding that has affected over 1.5 million people, and to the Padang, Indonesia earthquake that has affected approximately 500,000 people.
  • UPS is currently providing management and network assets in the affected areas where available and is coordinating with service agents JNE, Aspirindo, and Mandala Airlines in Indonesia to support WFP transport operations. Local management is coordinating with WFP field offices. UPS will deploy Logistic Emergency Team members Stephen Stroner, Jason Chew and/or Clement Zhang, as necessary, to support of WFP relief operations.

Local Operational Support:

Philippines

  • Oliver Bartolo, UPS Operations manager for UPS Manila has been made available by the Asia Pac Region to coordinate the services needed by the WFP Logistics Cluster team for one month.
  • UPS will also provide the following assets: two 4-wheeler trucks (16 hour operations per day, one driver and one helper included - duration one month);  one 6-wheeler truck (16 hour operations per day, one driver and one helper included - duration one month); 300 square meters warehouse space for storage of non-perishable items (duration one month)

Indonesia (Padang and West Sumatra)

  • Murali Krishnan, UPS Indonesia country manager, reports that UPS has dispatched two managers, Fajar Handayakno and Mohammad Ribin, to assist with WFP activities in Padang to support domestic distribution of relief materials.
  • WFP has requested approximately 5 trucks to deliver relief materials to various outlying areas around Padang. Asperindo, an association for express companies in Indonesia, has donated one truck and UPS is coordinating delivery. 
  • WFP has a backlog of approximately 10 tons of biscuits to be sent from Jakarta to Padang. UPS was able to get space to move daily approximately 2 tons.

Financial/In-kind support 

  • The UPS Foundation in support of flooding in Georgia and Tennessee provided a $100,000 grant to the American Red Cross.
  • The UPS Foundation in support of the Asia Pacific Region is making a $50,000 grant to the Philippines Red Cross through the American Red Cross SE Asia Typhoons and Floods Fund. These funds will specifically support relief efforts by the Philippines Red Cross. 
  • The UPS Foundation in support of the Asia Pacific Region is making a $48,200 grant to the United Way of Taiwan for reconstruction following Typhoon Morakot, which wrought catastrophic damage in Taiwan during August, leaving 461 people dead and causing an estimated $3.3 billion USD in damages.
  • A shipment of high priority medicines and medical supplies from AmeriCares is being transported by UPS from the U.S. to the Philippines in collaboration with the Philippines Red Cross and the Philippines National Disaster Coordinating council. 
  • A shipment of high priority personal hygiene kits from Americares is being transported by UPS from the U.S. to Philippines. 
  • A shipment of priority medicines, clothing, food, blankets and relief supplies on behalf of the Philippine Consulate General New York is being transported by UPS to the Philippines Department of Social Welfare and Development.
  • UPS is currently working with strategic partners at the American Red Cross, CARE and UNICEF to evaluate opportunities to provide in-kind relief shipments to  American Samoa, Philippines and Indonesia.
