Ubisoft has released a new Assassin's Creed 4 trailer which sets the scene for the game by providing some historical context.
The publisher has said it hopes to "redefine piracy in entertainment" with the upcoming game.
"We're staying away from clichés," lead content manager Carsten Myhill said earlier this year. "Things like walking the plank, parrots on the shoulder and hooks for hands.
"We are giving pirates the HBO, reality treatment. No longer is it for kids."
Ubisoft has confirmed an Assassin's Creed 4 release date of October 29 in the US and November 1 in the UK.
