Griselda Hernandez, UPS's Mexico general manager, has received this year's Best Executive in Latin America award at the sixth annual presentation of Stevie® Awards Women in Business.
The award is part of an international competition recognizing the accomplishments of outstanding women executives, business owners and the organizations they run. Hernandez, who was cited for her accomplishments over the past year as UPS's top executive in Mexico, received the Stevie Award at a gala event at New York's Marriott Marquis Hotel on Nov. 13.
"This is a symbol of how much women executives have grown in Latin America, and a symbol of our achievements as leaders in the business world," said Hernandez. "This award also recognizes the tremendous work put forth by all UPS employees in Mexico and Latin America, all of whom have helped maintain UPS as the leading transportation company in the region despite the challenges we've faced in the market this past year."
Since joining UPS Mexico in 1991, Hernandez has held numerous leadership positions throughout the company, all the while removing barriers to the advancement of female executives in Latin America. Her appointment as general manager of Mexico in 2006 represented a milestone as the country's first female leader.
Under Hernandez's leadership, UPS Mexico has expanded its operations to 100% of the country's postal codes, providing a broad network for customers in over 300 key locations across the country. In 2009 alone, UPS launched two major new services for exporters in the country: UPS Ground Freight, for ground services to the U.S. and Canada, and UPS Standard, a cost-effective small package ground service to the U.S.
"Griselda has dedicated herself to the continued growth of UPS in Mexico and this award is an excellent recognition of her success as a leader and an executive," said Steve Flowers, president, UPS Americas.
The 2009 Stevie Awards for Women in Business are governed by a board of distinguished judges and advisors that features many leading women entrepreneurs and luminaries in business, and are produced by the creators of the prestigious American Business AwardsSM. More than 1,100 entries from organizations of all sizes and in virtually every industry were submitted for consideration.
