Pico-ITX SBC runs Linux on 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro

Inforce Computing has unveiled a $149 Linux- and Android-friendly Pico-ITX single-board computer (SBC) based on a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor. The tiny SBC comes with 2GB RAM and 4GB flash memory, and provides HDMI out, MIPI-CSI camera input, WiFi and Bluetooth wireless, a GbE port, and numerous other functions.

BeagleBone hops up to 1GHz. Drops price to $45. Woof!

BeagleBoard.org on April 23 will officially announce a faster 1GHz version of its hackable, open-source BeagleBone SBC for only $45. The BeagleBone Black runs Linux or Android on a 1GHz TI Sitara AM3359 processor, doubles RAM to 512MB of DDR3, adds 2GB of onboard flash, and features a new micro-HDMI port.

ARM Mini-ITX SBC gets serious about serial

Cadia Networks announced a Mini-ITX motherboard that runs embedded Linux or Android on a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A8 Freescale i.MX53 SOC (system-on-chip) and features 12 onboard serial ports. The MIT-5500 is equipped with 1GB of DDR3 RAM and up to 4GB NAND flash, and offers dual display HD video on VGA, HDMI, or LVDS displays.

Beagles, Boards, and Raspberry Pi…Oh my!

Raspberry Pi co-creator Gert Van Loo (pictured) and master-modder Ben Heck will be active participants in electronic distributor Newark element14′s expo booth at Design West (ESC) in San Jose next week. Events and activities at the booth will include hands-on demos, product giveaways, Q&A sessions, and tutorials on developing Arduino-based applications and using ARM development tools.

Video transcoding system runs Linux on DaVinci SOC

Z3 Technology has introduced a video transcoding subsystem based on a new Texas Instruments TMS320DM8269 DaVinci system-on-chip (SOC). The FPGA-enabled Z3-DM8169-MCVI-RPS targets 1080p/H.264 video processing requirements in applications such as broadcast video encoding and decoding, real-time transcoding at 60fps, security and surveillance, video conferencing, and industrial video processing equipment.

SODIMM-style Tegra 3 COM gains updated ARM Linux

Toradex has released an updated embedded Linux BSP for its tiny, SODIMM-style COM (computer on module) based on Nvidia’s 1.4GHz, quad-core Tegra 3 processor. The Colibri T30 COM is equipped with 1GB of DDR3 RAM and 2GB of flash, and integrates controllers for HDMI, Ethernet, USB, analog input, and various other I/O functions.

Tiny Pico-ITX SBC offers choice of dual-core Atom CPUs

Axiomtek announced a Pico-ITX single-board computer (SBC) that supports dual-core Intel Atom N2800 and N2600 processors, clocked at 1.86GHz and 1.6GHz respectively. The Linux-friendly PICO831 supports up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, provides full-size and half-size PCI Express Mini slots, features an optional 16GB SATA SSD.

Kontron spins SMARC COMs for Sitara, i.MX6, Tegra 3 SOCs

Kontron launched a “SMARC Starterkit” featuring a carrier board and seven-inch touchscreen for three new ARM modules adhering to the SMARC standard. The three supported COMs are built around TI’s 800MHz Sitara AM3874, Freescale’s 1.2GHz multicore i.MX6, and Nvidia’s 1.2GHz quadcore Tegra 3 SOCs, and they’re all backed by embedded Linux and Android support.

Open Atom SBC runs Angstrom Linux, nears production

The MinnowBoard, an open single-board computer (SBC) design based on a 1GHz Intel Atom E640 processor and running Angstrom embedded Linux, is swimming swiftly toward first production. Tiny COM runs Linux, Android on quad-core i.MX6

CompuLab is shipping a Linux- and Android-ready COM built around the 1.2GHz Freescale i.MX6 processor, giving developers a choice of one, two, or four ARM Cortex-A9 cores. The CM-FX6 measures 75×65 mm, offers up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and uses dual 140-pin connectors to supply interfaces like I2C, CAN, SATA, and HDMI.

ARM-based device developers get SMARC COMs

The Standardization Group for Embedded Technologies (SGET) recently ratified a standard for highly compact ARM-based computer-on-modules (COMs). Formerly known as ULP-COM, the “SMARC” specification defines 82×50 and 82×80 mm formats using 314-pin MXM3 connectors, and is designed for low-power mobile and embedded device applications.

Open hardware quad-core ARM SBC hits Kickstarter

A project to build a compact, low cost, open-hardware SBC (single board computer) has turned to Kickstarter for funding its way to production. The 110×85 mm UDOO board runs Linux or Android on an ARM i.MX6 Freescale applications processor, and also has a built-in Arduino Due-compatible subsystem.

VersaLogic announced a rugged, credit card-sized COM Express Mini module based on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom E6x0T processor. The Linux-ready VL-COMm-26 is also available as part of a “Falcon” subsystem that sandwiches the module with an I/O board of the same size.

SODIMM-style modules run Linux on ARM Cortex-A8 CPUs

Denx Computer Systems has introduced a second member of its SODIMM-style COM (computer-on-module) product line. The M53 module is available with Freescale’s i.MX535 or i.MX537 SOCs (system-on-chip processors), which integrate an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU core, graphics engines, and numerous other functions.

U.S. swallows first $25 Raspberry Pi batch in one gulp

The Raspberry Pi’s $25 “Model A” made a brief appearance this week on the website of Allied Electronics, its U.S. distributor. Compared to its $35 sibling, the lower end Linux-fired SBC (single board computer) sports half the RAM, one USB port instead of two, and lacks an Ethernet spigot.
