Disney Infinity dev diary explores relationship between creativity and play in the Toy Box

Disney has released a new behind-the-scenes video discussing the genesis and development of the free-form Toy Box in Disney Infinity. The origins of the build-your-own-game Toy Box came from developing a potential tie-in game to Pixar's Toy Story 3, say developers at Avalanche Software. Rather than just making a game that followed the events of the story, they focused on the possibility of playing with the Toy Story characters as one would actual toys. Different characters had different abilities, and the developers found that children playtesting the game would learn how to use the abilities together in emergent, evolving gameplay. The concept grew bigger from there, incorporating characters from across Disney's many franchises, until it became the Toy Box in Disney Infinity. D...

Game & Wario launching June 28 in Europe

Game & Wario, the upcoming minigame collection starring Mario's pudgy nemesis, will be released June 28 in Europe on Wii U, publisher Nintendo of Europe announced today. It launched in Japan at the end of March, and is set for release June 23 in North America. Game & Wario features single-player and multiplayer minigames, not the smaller "microgames" of the WarioWare series. But it appears to share that franchise's meta commentary on the medium in experiences like the Gamer minigame, in which the user plays as a character playing WarioWare-esque microgames. Check out our Game & Wario preview for more details on the specific minigames.

Scribblenauts' inclusion of Nyan Cat and Keyboard Cat lands creator in trademark lawsuit (update)

Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell and publisher Warner Bros. are named in a trademark infringement suit for the series' inclusion of Nyan Cat and Keyboard Cat, according to a complaint recently filed by the memes' respective creators. Charles Schmidt, who uploaded Keyboard Cat's breakout performance to YouTube in 2007, and Christopher Orlando Torres, who made the quickly viral Nyan Cat animated GIF, jointly filed a copyright and trademark infringement suit against the two companies. Both felines can be conjured up in-game using protagonist Max's magic notebook, but their cameos were not cleared with Schmidt or Torres, the suit claims. Keyboard Cat has appeared in all Scribblenauts titles released throughout the franchise's history, while Nyan Cat only appeared in Scribblenauts...

Rayman Legends musical level features Survivor's 'Eye of the Tiger'

A new Rayman Legends trailer is out from Ubisoft showing off one of the game's more musical levels. In the trailer, axe-wielding new character Barbara tackles the "Mariachi Madness" stage, a high-speed test of one's platforming skills. The player is encouraged along by the soundtrack, which in this case is a mariachi-band arrangement of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," the theme song for Rocky 3. The action and music are coordinated to go hand in hand, with Lum-collecting and enemy-killing alike matched to bits of the song. "Eye of the Tiger" was composed for Rocky 3 at the request of actor Sylvester Stallone, who was reportedly unable to get the rights to Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust." Rayman Legends hits Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U this September.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past sequel sees return of light and dark Hyrule

The Nintendo 3DS sequel to SNES classic The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past will see some of the original title's gameplay elements return, like the dark and light versions of Hyrule, but it "certainly feels different," according to producer Eiji Aonuma. In an interview with CNET, Aonuma confirms the return of the Dark World and Light World in the Link to the Past sequel, which Nintendo has not given an official title in North America. He also explains that the inspiration for Link's new ability to flatten himself into a 2D image and travel along walls comes from Nintendo 64 game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. In that game, Phantom Ganon could jump into the paintings of the Forest Temple. Aonuma hinted that the 3DS sequel to A Link to the Past will feature a different...
