Dark Souls is an open world action role playing game set in a medieval fantasy world. It is a spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, and includes similar gameplay and features. Players are put into a challenging and hostile open world with the goal of surviving to reach the next bonfire. Bonfires act as checkpoints where players can rest and refill their items, but doing so causes all the non-boss enemies to respawn in the world.

Dead Island: Riptide Steam codes at U.K. retail unlock Dark Souls instead

Some Steam users in the U.K. attempting to redeem codes for Dead Island: Riptide have instead unlocked Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, according to posts on the Steam forums. A group of players who purchased the codes at retail found they had access to Namco Bandai's game rather than the sequel to Deep Silver's 2011 zombie-slashing action title. Deep Silver community manager Maurice Tan took to the forums to explain the situation, stating the code mix-up affected retail copies of Riptide in the U.K. and Nordic regions. "To the best of my knowledge this issue would affect retail copies in the United Kingdom and Nordic countries," he wrote. "We are aware of this mixup by whoever printed these codes for a completely different game from a different publisher, and are working on a...

Lords of the Fallen will feature advanced combat and Borderlands-like skill trees

CI Games' Lords of the Fallen is a difficult action role-playing game with Borderlands-like skill trees and character development, executive producer Tomasz Gop said in an interview with Eurogamer. "It's a challenging game, action RPG, which means a lot of advanced combat," he told Eurogamer. "When you walk through a location, and you have to fight 10 enemies, that takes around an hour. "When you fight in Mortal Kombat, when you fight in Tekken, that's why it takes so long — Dark Souls is probably a strong reference as well," he said. But he went on to explain that have also incorporated skill trees and classes, inspired by Borderlands. Lords of the Fallen is slated for a 2014 release on Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and the next-generation Xbox. When questioned about the next Xbox,...

Dark Souls PC mod designed to allow instant summons between friends online

A Dark Souls player has taken it upon himself to add a long-requested feature to the Windows PC version of the game: the option to more easily connect with friends, instead of random strangers, for cooperative and competitive play. The Dark Souls Connectivity Fix — or DSCfix — by "M0tah" was released earlier this week with the intent to "improve the online experience when attempting to engage in jolly cooperation with friends." Normally, Dark Souls players have few options in reliably connecting to players on their friends list, but DSCfix prioritizes connections to friends. The modification to the game's normal behavior is accomplished with an interception DLL used in conjunction with Peter "Durante" Thoman's DSfix mod, which improved the Dark Souls PC port's resolution and frame...

Dark Souls director in a supervising role for Dark Souls 2, encouraging tighter production schedule

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki will not be involved in the development of Dark Souls 2, instead stepping back into a less-involved supervising role and assisting with production scheduling, according to an interview with Miyazaki at Edge Online. Miyazaki told Edge he is looking into server-based networking for Dark Souls 2's online multiplayer, a move away from Dark Souls peer-to-peer system. He has also assisted in nailing down a development schedule, citing player criticism over the numerous polishing patches released post-launch for Dark Souls as a reason for tightening production. "I'm aware that many fans were a little bit frustrated about Dark Souls in terms of the scheduling — more specifically speaking, about the patches that we've released," he...

Namco Bandai releases photos of Dark Souls 2 development at From Software

A recent update to Namco Bandai's Facebook page includes three pictures from a "recent visit to Japan" where the developers at From Software are working on Dark Souls 2. The photos show an office quite a bit brighter than the world of Dark Souls with artists sketching out armor, weapons and characters on dual-screen setups. You can check out the rest of the pictures on Facebook to see what ghastly creatures you might run into in the sequel that's headed to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC. Dark Souls 2 was announced in December with a teaser trailer at the Spike Video Game Awards. We've since learned that the game has been in development since September 2011, will be roughly twice the size of Dark Souls and aims to be more accessible to newcomers. For more Dark Souls 2 visuals,...

Steam user creates guide for streamlining multiplayer connections in Dark Souls

Steam user jonaswashe created a guide to help his fellow Dark Souls players improve the reliability of FromSoftware's in-game summoning mechanic and battle the hollow in multiplayer, according to a post published on Steam Users' Forums. According to the guide, the basic problem centers around network settings. It includes tips for firewall settings and ensuring that your PC is set up correctly with OpenNAT and UPnP. He suggests installing a program called Comodo Firewall Free, which allows a more granular view of your connections than Windows' built-in software. By using his methods and avoiding the temptation to spam summoning signs, the author writes that he can "reliably summon a friend in around 5-10 minutes on average." This guide is the latest in a series of player-created...

Dark Souls 2 developer: If Dark Souls was set in the North Pole, this one would be in the South Pole

There is no direct connection in the story between Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2, but the two games share a similar core, according to Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki. In an interview with Famitsu magazine this week, Miyazak — who is moving from his previous director role to a supervising role, while Tomohiro Shibuya will step up to the director's chair — revealed that Dark Souls 2 would not be a vastly different game from its predecessor. "If we're going to announce this as a sequel to Dark Souls then I think there's certainly a core that we need to protect," Miyazaki said. "I'm talking about how we think about the difficulty level and how you achieve things in-game; about the concepts behind the mechanics and level design. Outside of that core, though, I think it's better to...

Dark Souls' most mysterious in-game item was a prank, says game director Hidetaka Miyazaki

One of the gifts Dark Souls players can choose when building their character, the humble Pendant, is clear about its uselessness. "No effect, but fond memories comfort travelers," reads the trinket's description. But Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki sparked speculation about its hidden powers when he suggested that players choose it upon starting the game. A year later, following rampant speculation about the Pendant's powers, Miyazaki says the seemingly useless item was part of a "prank" he wanted to play on Dark Souls players. Miyazaki, cryptic as ever, tells IGN that "I actually had a little bit of an intention to play a prank" in steering Dark Souls fans toward choosing the item in favor of more useful gifts, advice he originally offered in an interview with Japan's Famitsu...

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition for PC on sale for $19.90

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, the PC version of last year's punishing action-RPG that added new content to the game, is now on sale through Amazon for $19.90. The game is available as a download only, and requires a Steam account for installation and activation. The PC version of the game comes pre-expanded with Artorias of the Abyss, which added new locations, enemies and a side plot. The DLC was released on the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network on Oct. 23. There's no telling when the discount, which cuts the game's usual $39.99 price tag by more than half, will expire, so parties seeking Dark Souls unique brand of pain should act quickly.

Dark Souls update weakens weapons, adds warp zones in advance of Artorias of the Abyss DLC

From Software and Namco Bandai have released the 1.06 update for the console versions of Dark Souls to prep the game for the forthcoming Artorias of the Abyss downloadable content. While the addition of more warp-capable bonfires may make traveling through the game easier, From Software has also made other aspects of the dark fantasy role-playing game more difficult. The effectiveness of items like the Black Knight Greataxe, Mask of the Mother, Mask of the Father and Eagle Shield have been reduced in Dark Souls' 1.06 patch, as have magic attacks like Crystal Soul Spear and Sunlight Spear. Changes to the behavior of the Dark Wood Grain Ring and Hornet Ring have also been implemented, making their effects weaker. Elemental weapon attributes including flame, chaos flame and lightning have...
