U.S., NATO Have Some 1,000 Interceptor Missiles - Rogozin

The United States and its NATO allies already have about one thousand missiles capable of intercepting Russia’s intercontinental ballistic missiles, the Russian deputy premier in charge of defense said.

"Along with its allies, whom the U.S. now persuades to buy ships equipped with the Aegis Combat System, the overall potential can be estimated at about 1,000 interceptor missiles,” Dmitry Rogozin, who is also the Russian president’s special representative for talks with NATO, said in an interview with the Ekho Moskvy radio station.

He said that the figure is currently approaching the limits established by the recently signed Russia-U.S. strategic arms reduction treaty.

"There are no guarantees that after the first, second, and third phases [of the U.S. missile shield project] are completed, there will be no fourth, fifth and sixth. Do you really think they will halt all their technologies after 2020? That’s nonsense! They will go ahead with developing and boosting technical parameters of their interceptor missiles and performance capabilities of their warning [missile defense] systems,” Rogozin said.

He said that U.S. interceptor missiles cover all European Russia to the Urals Mountains, and are capable of hitting not only small and medium-range missiles of “rogue states,” but also intercontinental ballistic missiles of Russia’s armed forces.

"The fact that the missile defense system can hit strategic missiles and the fact that those bases and fleet are deployed in northern seas demonstrate the evident… anti-Russian nature of the [U.S.] missile defense,” Rogozin said.

Russia-NATO missile defense talks are close to deadlock as Moscow is seeking written, legally binding guarantees that the U.S.-backed European missile defense program will not be directed against it. Washington, however, refuses to provide the guarantees, saying the shield is directed against threats from Iran and North Korea.

Russia and NATO agreed to cooperate on European missile defense system at the Lisbon Summit in November 2010. President Dmitry Medvedev proposed a joint system with full-scale interoperability to ensure that the alliance's system will not be directed against Moscow. The military bloc, however, favors two independent systems which exchange information.

Time to put nuclear submarines back into US waters. Time to move missile forces back into Cuba. Time to set up a military base in Venezuela.

Russia surely knew for a long time that it is the only realistic and conceivable target of this sophisticated ABM network being deployed by US and NATO. They realize that a reduced Russia has only single claim to world power status, it's ICBM force and they ant to neutralize it. They are moving in to kill the status of Russia as a power of any consequence. While Russia was cutting forces, they never stopped fighting the Cold war. The US/NATO ABM is the single biggest security challenge facing Russian military today.

Russia must respond with MIRV warheads, Liquid fueled maneuvering rockets, targeting of European land based ABM sites with Iskander missiles and sea denial to Aegis ships near its territorial waters.

Let's be realistic. No written warranty warrants Russia of not beeing targeted by US-Nato missile and anti-missile defenses. As it is a complete mad delirious from western countries if they think they can attack Russia without beein completely destroyed. Look at the Putin face, he is tranquil. Why not to revive Cuba missile bases? Comrade Fidel would adore.

Yes NATO have put the damn things in defence, but NOT against Russia.
Russia is our friend (i'm from the UK)and hopefully will always be.
The 'apparent' threat from Iran has caused the issue.
I believe we all would prefer peace, rather than silly people in positions of power messing with the world.

Russia's Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov has a new worry - an assistant for Defense that is technically incompetent. I mean seriously: how do you defend your population from a "missile threat" that is physically incapable of attacking anything but an airborne object within 500 km of the launcher? What "population" is he thinking of defending - Aeroflot?

The quantities quoted also cannot bear a little scrutiny - over 1000 interceptor missiles??? Apparently Minister Rogozin is counting the entire SAM missile inventory for the entire US Navy worldwide. When he includes US allies that use AEGIS, the total of 103 ships is counted by him as a part of the missile threat. Such inconvenient little factoids include (1) the missile has a 500 km range against airborne targets only, (2) several of the allies and most US ships are nowhere near within 500 km of Russian territory, (3) the vast bulk of the interceptors fielded are of the SM-2 variety that have no ABM potential. His statement that “U.S. interceptor missiles cover all European Russia to the Urals Mountains” is arrant nonsense.

"The fact that the missile defense system can hit strategic missiles and the fact that those bases and fleet are deployed in northern seas demonstrate the evident… anti-Russian nature of the [U.S.] missile defense,” Rogozin said. Almost everything north of the equator is NOT within 500 km of Russian territory, most of Russia’s ICBM’s are in Asian Russia, Russia’s northern border is the frozen Arctic Ocean and its southern border is China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and the Caspian Sea. All of the Russian Arctic is off-limits to foreign warships, as is the Sea of Okhotsk. When a single AEGIS warship enters the Black Sea, the Russian Black Sea Fleet goes on high alert and all of Moscow is stressing out.

      Need I go on?

Rogozin is a good politician: he can easily ignore the most basic and obvious of facts to make statements that further his party’s agenda. A pity he is so unconvincing he merely comes off as a clown to all but the most illiterate who read his propaganda. The fact of the matter is that the interceptor missiles actually available aren’t yet adequate for Iran and North Korea’s missile threat of a couple dozen missiles each. Against the 1700-2200 weapons approved by SORT, everything NATO has to throw against that wouldn’t even be noticed by Russian Strategic Rocket Forces. None of this is any threat to Russia – mainly because NATO and the USA have zero interest in threatening Russia in any way. Why bother? The USA and Europe have enough problems! Thus, all this rhetoric is meant solely to sooth the nationalist attitudes of the Russian masses before the presidential elections next month. It will all blow over by summer, and everyone will forget this was ever an issue.

Naturally, talk of Russian FBM’s in the Atlantic and East Pacific, and/or ICBM’s in either Cuba or Venezuela, is even more foolish now than it was in the 1960’s. More nationalist posturing – nothing more.
