New Xbox will be named Infinity - Report

Dan Chiappini

New console to be called Xbox Infinity; development kits already in the hands of studios.

The next Microsoft console will be named Xbox Infinity, according to a report by the UK arm of the International Business Times.

Unnamed sources, who are believed to be involved in the development of the new console, confirmed to the publication that the new hardware will simply be called Xbox Infinity. These claims mirror those of a reportedly leaked image, which recently appeared on the Reddit website.

IBTimes UK sources also revealed that development units have already been made available to software developer partners. Previous rumours suggested that some of Microsoft's next-generation titles may have been cancelled, while others may be as much as six months behind schedule.

Microsoft is expected to officially unveil its next home console to the public at its event on May 21. Rumours have circulated for months regarding the branding that the Redmond, Washington, software giant will elect to use for the Xbox 360's successor, with Xbox 720, the Next Xbox, and the device's development codename, Durango all being used in lieu of any official moniker.

GameSpot contacted Microsoft seeking clarification, but a spokesperson declined, saying, "We do not comment on rumours or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

[Update] Reddit user C-Ron, the original poster and alleged creator of the Xbox Infinity logo has contacted GameSpot claiming the design is fake, and was intended solely as a "mock-up". The information comes to light more than two weeks after the original image was released.

XBox... uhh... INFINITY!!!!

It's a schoolyard argument, people.

I wonder how many people won't know what the new system is by name. Clearly regular gamers that would be reading this know, but many casual people don't. Many people still think the Wii-U is an add-on for the original Wii and without a clear title like Xbox 3 or PS4 some people may not follow it.

@Toysoldier34 I think Infinity is a dull name, but I can see why they would come up with that. The name lends itself really well to be advertised. Infinite entertainment, infinite games, infinite possibilities, infinite control, infinite fun, infinite content, infinitely better... all simple lines that would get the message across really well. I just made those up, but no doubt you will see allot of advertising with similiar lines.

Everyone will know. Everyone knew with Xbox 360 instead of Xbox 2 and I think Infinity is an even easier name to get out there and promote.

The problem with the Wii U was that it was not communicated by Nintendo what it was to the general public. Only to gamers. We knew instantly what it was, but the general public only knows: 'There is something called a Wii U' and they have to figure out what it is themselves.

If we only knew 'Wii U' we probably wouldn't think it was their next system either. We'd think HD model or some software before we thought that.

@Toysoldier34 The difference is that Microsoft will advertise the shit out of it, unlike the Wii-U.

They flipped the 8 from Windows 8 on its side. This is actually pretty cool, and it sounds nice. I don't mind. The term "360" actually had an implication for this generation's system in that it "immerses the living room." MS went all out with that. If I were to guess what implication infinity has, *if any*, then perhaps this is going to be a console where an optional, standardized GPU upgrade is presented every 3 years (but not a CPU upgrade because that would add too many variables, so the system would still retire after a certain point). No, that wouldn't make it the same as a normal computer but it would be closer than ever.

@okassar They called it the Xbox 360 because it had to sit on shelves next to the PS3. In people's minds when they see Playstation 3 sitting next to the Xbox 2 it is easy for people to subconsciously think lesser of the Xbox. The 360 adds in the 3 to keep them on the same level without flat out calling it the Xbox 3 when there wasn't a second.

@Toysoldier34 @Egotte I read the same as toysoldier in some article by microsoft that they wanted to avoid 2 when compared to playstation 3.

Toysoldier34
Toysoldier34

@Egotte That is what they will say it means and that is what they came up with naming it, but they didn't call it the Xbox 2 for many reasons.

No, no, no you guys have it wrong - it's not Xbox "Infinity", it's Xbox "Sideways Eight", because Microsoft is going to turn the 8th generation of consoles on it's side with the Xbox Infinity.

...err, wait.

Wow. Just. WOW.

You idiots.

You saw a pretty picture that "looks" professional reported by another site, with absolutely no reliable source behind it, and you immediately assumed it's the real deal?

It's a fucking Reddit image.

Holy shit. You should all be ashamed. Gamespot, what the hell?!

Did any of your writers and journalists ever actually take a course in journalism, or do you think just because you know how to write articles you're immediately qualified? What an embarassment. No wonder you guys have been churning out ridiculous opinionated "articles" ( I call them glorified blogposts) and false information.

You didn't even call it a rumor -- you called it a report.

Jesus...

@TohouAsura He links to the reddit page in the article. You should try a different browser if you are getting display problems. When I use Chrome I can see words below the headline title and above the comments section. I would highly recommend it.

Hmm not convinced MS will get it right this time, Sony always seem to come right out the gate with an awesome product, I feel MS will have issue after issue, so many changes being made to their console too (rumours anyway). Will see how it pans.

Triple team of Nintendo, Sony, and PC WILL GO TO TAKE the Ruthless Microsoft DOWN AND SPIT Microsoft in the face someday!

@commanderxp90 Most of those PC games run on windows..right.. so win column for microsoft this cycle, and we rub our hands anticipating the new hardware...here we go again!  I don't think the next generation of gaming will be as good as this one, i think this was the best since i first fired off my atari 2600. Competition was good for the Industry. Steam saved pc gaming as the console onslaught threatened to edge out pc into extinction. If only PC's could offer more than FPS's and rts's. Personally am tired of steam and its endless stream of indie garbage playing on our nostalgia of the golden years of gaming.

@MONEYMUFFINS Nah bro, because if you can shorten Playstation 4 to PS4, we can shorten Xbox Infinity to just Xbox. And that's less syllables than PS4. So suck it.

This image was created a month or so ago by a Reddit user.  He posted this and said that it was "insider information". After media outlets ran with it, apparently not having checked the source, the same user posted another post explaining that the image was something he fabricated and that he photoshopped it.

The internet has been had. That never happens...

sladakrobot

@Drunkvampiresex It is a know fact for about 11 years that xbl costs money and that you get all service if you pay and minimum if you dont pay.
If you dont like it or you cant afford it,there are enough alternatives.
Maybe Microsoft will change some things about the silver membership and all we can do is wait till 21th of may(and few following days) for, hopefully, few infos about it.

@sladakrobot I agree, there are some great alternatives to XBL, PSN for instance :) PSN Home is fun, free and sweet! Not to mention absolutely free DC Universe and Dust 514

@Akijo Although xbox constrols are bulkier, i must agree that tip of thumbsticks make them more ergonomic that original ps3 controls. my fingers used to hurt after excessive gaming, but i fixed that custom gamepad for 30$.

Actually I had a xbox "war in the north" coop marathon last weekend, and must say although more ergonomic than ps3 original controller, xbox original controller have lot lower quality. first i had to fix battery contacts and then buttont were cracking all the time... if that was Sony controller some one would have to perform a harakiri.

as for "so I'd just be alone with random 12 years old kids"... i'm sorry, but only a 13year-old kid would say that

@puukusa @sladakrobot Yeaaah, some people just dont like the Playstation. Me for example, I think the Dual Shock is clunky and unconfortable exept for fighting games. Also you cant chat with people between games. And all my friend have a Xbox, so I'd just be alone with random 12 years old kids.

the xbox infinity will last forever there will be no need for a system after the infinity, microsoft spokesperson says : we have found new ways thru software updates to just keep the new machine going and going

To cut a long story short its either going to be called 'Fusion' or (and more likely) 'Infinity'.

So there you have it, lets just wait 9 days and see for sure!
