Ouya launch delayed by 3 weeks

Company cites high retail demand for slip; controller defect also fixed

Ouya's launch has been delayed by three weeks, from June 4 to June 25.

Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman cited high retail demand for the slip, telling Joystiq:

"We've had incredibly positive reactions from our retail partners, and so in order to meet their greater than expected demand, we decided to shift the launch date by a couple of weeks - three weeks - which will allow us to create more units and, basically, have more units on store shelves in June."

Uhrman also discussed how the company has addressed a defect with the initial Ouya controller, which resulted in buttons getting stuck beneath the pad's faceplate.

"I don't know what the exact millimeter is, but we've increased the size just a little bit, so now the buttons don't stick under it. We made that change very early so all the units are being produced with those larger button holes."

Corrected controllers will ship alongside Ouya's retail launch units. Asked if new controllers are being sent to Ouya Kickstarter backers who received early units, a company spokesperson said:

"If backers have a problem with their controller, we will work with them to resolve the issue via customer service."

Ouya also said today that it has raised $15 million in new funding led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, with participation from the Mayfield Fund, Nvidia, Shasta Ventures and Occam Partners.

The firm plans to use the money to support Ouya's growing game development community, which it claims currently numbers over 12,000, and to meet increased retail demand for the upcoming launch.

On June 25, Ouya will be available for purchase in the US, Canada and the UK through Amazon, Best Buy, GAME, GameStop, Target and Ouya.tv. It will cost $99.99 / £99.99, with additional controllers priced at £39.99 / $49.99.
