EA secures exclusive rights to 'core' Star Wars game development

EA and Disney sign multi-year agreement for new 'core' Star Wars titles

EA has signed a multi-year deal with Disney to secure the exclusive rights to the development and global publishing of new Star Wars games.

The deal, announced today, will see EA develop Star Wars titles for "a core gaming audience", with games "spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres".

Disney, which acquired Lucasfilm and, with it, the rights to Star Wars last year for $4.05 billion, will retain "certain rights" to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.

"Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe," said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau, who confirmed that Battlefield developer DICE will be among those working on new Star Wars games.

"Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans," he said. "DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay."

Disney Interactive co-president said, "This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come.

"Collaborating with one of the world's premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world."

The deal comes in the wake of Disney having shut down the video game publishing arm of LucasArts, just five months after its acquisition of the Lucasfilm subsidiary. Reports claimed that both of the studio's projects - Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault - were cancelled outright.

While Lucasfilm at the time suggested that LucasArts' projects could be rescued via a licensing deal with an external developer, today's announcement made no mention of whether any part of the shelved projects will be picked up by EA.

The last decent Star Wars game was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the Xbox/PC, i knew this was going to happen when it was announced Disney were getting their hands on Star Wars.

Guess with it being EA there will be no WiiU or 3DS games either.

Well, I knew this was going to happen.
    It was inevitable.

Still, as long as EA take a new direction purely for the Star Wars games then the games will be good. What they need to do is reboot old franchises and bring them to the newer generation. That means Battlefront, and other games like Rouge Squadron, KotOR, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and maybe new games like First Assault and 1313.

I only wonder whether there will be any announcements - even if they haven't got anything to show yet - at the EA conference during E3.

Hehe, I love people referring to EA as the worst company in America. It's as though all those foreclosures, debt refusals and oil mercs dont mean that much.

In any case, I think its quite fantastic news - not only because its more Star Wars but the thought of Star Wars by DICE on Frostbite 3 seems a little overpowered. Battlefield style multiplayer in a Star Wars setting? Hell yeah - ill take that.

I look forward to seeing if the rumor regarding EA and Xbox are true in a few week, ontop of that.. E3 is looking even more awesome now.

Have you been asleep for the last 10-15 year? Everyone hates the prequels(I personally like Episode 1 & 3) so that frigged the film, The Force Unleashed games are crap, they had that aweful animated childrens series, and they had Han Solo dancing in a Kinect game, I doubt EA are really going to do much harm to the brand.

I'm pleased by this news, EA know what makes a good and successful game and have many great studios capable of doing it for Star Wars. And I hope Disney give them the right to make a game(s) based around the original trilorgy. How utterly brilliant would that be. Or a game based on Episode 1. Would love to do some pod racing or battle Darth Maul.

Link? Wasn't that some uncomfirmed rumor? They also aren't running the online infrastructure for playstation, or xbox or h devices. Aren't there games even on steam? Do you seem them jumping at the chance to release games for the vita? Is it because they are angry there is no origin? Or because they just don't see it as particularly worth the effort yet...EA aren't a child throwing a tantrum, they are a massive company with lots of moving parts. They are even under new management. They can't even be evil, they just do what corporations do. Ever if it's true that they wanted to run nintendo's online infrastructure, that doesn't change the fact that if they thought it would make them money, they would be there.

This is just more nintendo fans blaming every shortcoming of a nintendo console on third parties. Oh it's third parties that released the 3ds way too early. It's their lack of creativity that prevented them from all jumping on the wii like the revolution it was. It's because nintendo games are just too gosh darned great for them to compete right?

I wouldn't want modern BioWare near a third KotOR game. I'd prefer Obsidian or somebody else do it who actually WANT to make RPGs. BioWare would just give you a voiced, named protagonist, have barely any real choices because they don't want their story and cinematics ruined by player agency and make it too much about the combat these days.

Sigh, I hate "exclusive" deals. It just leads to laziness. Why bother making an effort if you know you are locked into a contract? Personally I would love if Disney has some clause in the contract where is whatever was released didn't perform to an acceptable standard(NOT METACRITIC which is biased and weighted to certain outlets) then the licence reverts back. It wouldn't guarantee brilliance but should reduce any crap being published.

I expect yearly FPS clones now and a stormtrooper skin in BF:4

EA has the studios who can produce quality content but recently it looks like EA want to out their way to spoil it but making "executive decisions" that all games must have x+y. Casing points. Forced multiplayer, always online, rushed releases.

EA has the Star Wars license, they produced TOR, An MMO sequel to an RPG. It cost too much to produce and didn't please any of their target markets and went to what some call a busted F2P model at an alaraming rate.

I'm sure that there will be a diamond in the rough somewhere(throw enough 5hit at the wall and something wil stick) but I expect there to be a lot of "ok" games coming.

my thoughts exactly. visceral is a great choice for star wars, and a bioware developed kotor 3 (even if it ended up like another mass effect) would be most welcome. criterion wasn't mentioned, but supposedly they want to take a break from racing...

more kotor, more republic commando...however, the priority remains securing a future for 1313.

  55. DUBBA JAYTEE on 7 May '13 said:

Battlefront 3 in Frostbite 3.0 and a new KOTOR should come out of this. For now, I am on board. For everyone moaning about EA, they are hardly the devils they are portrayed as by casual gamers. Besides, at this point, as long as they don't put dancing Stormtroopers in their game, they are one step ahead of Lucasarts.
