Disney promises new Star Wars film every year from 2015

Will alternate between “Episodes” and standalones

Disney has begun to outline its plans for the Star Wars franchise, with the studio promising a new adventure in the galaxy far, far away every year from 2015.

The studio made the announcement at the CinemaCon festival, explaining that the films would alternate annually between the ongoing sequence of “Episodes” and a series of standalone movies.

We still haven’t had any confirmation as to which characters will be getting the spin-off treatment, although rumours have suggested that Yoda, Boba Fett and Han Solo movies are already in the works.

It’s a strikingly bold proposal from Disney, although recruitment has already begun on the screenwriting front, with Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg thought to be hard at work on the spin-offs.

Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams Star Wars: Episode VIIwill be the studio’s opening salvo, with that film pencilled in to open in 2015 and kick off the subsequent domino effect. Looks like we’ll have plenty to discuss over the coming months and years…

Is the announcement good news, or are Disney planning overkill? Tell us, below!

i never thought i'd say this, but doesn't this mean we'll essentially just be watching Star Wars and the Avengers for the next five years? Whilst my inner geek is excited, i'm already feeling the first signs of Marvel fatigue, and with a SW movie every year too, there's surely going to be less room for other movies, especially stand alone non sequel/franchises. Saying that, we'll propably end up approaching the next decade wearing capes and making light sabre noises.

@dangoodfellow: While I understand your concerns about fatigue, I do think you're overreacting. There will always be other movies every year.

A Star Wars film released every year? Multiple Marvel movies every year? It's my childhood dream come true :) No fatigue on my part, plus as @chibik says, there's always going to be plenty of other films and franchises new and old, more and mor efilsm are released every year nowadays, there's always room ... I just hope the quality remains strong and constant. With Marvel, I've enjoyed every film so far and I have faith in Abrams that he'll restore Star Wars to it's former glory (and the pain of the prequels will finally subside - lol)

The best way to dilute quality? Quantity.

@RaveyDavey - totally agreed. Never has the attitude "We're in it for the money!" been more obvious. Also reminds me of the Simpons episode where Homer went to hell - "You like Doughnuts? Then eat ALL the doughnuts in the WORLD!!"

Instead of promising a film every year, try promising a GOOD film. Even if it takes 3 or 4 years at a time.

I agree. We have three to four superhero movie every year for the past 5years and no one has complained - If you don't like the idea of 5 new Star Wars films then don't watch them simples - but I know I will be there , lightsaber in hand

I think it is fair to have concerns over this news as it stinks of making movies for money, not for entertainment. I totally appreciate that it is a business afterall, but they aren't exactly hiding their glee at showcasing their cash cow. We'll have to wait until 2015 to see if Jabba will say "Yanee dah poo noo!"

i suppose ultimately every movie stands on its own, and i am a looong time marvel and Star Wars fan, my concern is that Disney will pretty much rule the multiplex, with no competition that's big enough to challenge it. Whilst i've been over joyed with how they've approached the Avengers movies, and the diverse and interesting quality talent they've employed, i do think that the downside will be other stand alone movies like Dredd last summer struggling to find an audience. I will be there for the new Star Wars movies, just flash that logo anywhere near me and i'm like that dog in 'Up'......'Squirrel!'

Releasing a movie every year will no longer make Star Wars feel "special". Part of the excitement is the anticipation, right? Although, it can argued that the franchise is no longer special anyway - what with the prequels and constant Lucas tinkering. I reckon releasing a film per year will actually be damaging to their box-office success as opposed to releasing one every few years. Not sure how I worked that out, but my future-maths seem solid in my head.....

how is this bad? it makes up for the 20 or so years WITHOUT new Star Wars films. If u get sick of watching them, stop. if theyre not as 'good' as the original, watch the originals. if the films get half as deep into the lore as The Clone Wars and LucasArts (sob) did I will be satisfied.

'A new Star Wars film every year from 2015...', so not "six new star wars films each year, from 2015' (or how ever many there's going to be. Basically they're going to release one every year until people stop watching them. Oversaturation much?

@Mattburgess, sorry, meant to say 'six new star wars films WITH ONE RELEASED each year....' - basically i was trying to work out how many we're going to be getting. Is there just going to be a new trilogy, plus 3 stand-alone films between them, making six and then it will stop? or will they continue to bring one out each year, even when a story-arc is finished in the new trilogy?

I can only hope this won't end up sucking........... which actually means it probably will. I want so bad for this to be awesome, so that probably means it will end up being Jar Jar Binks times 1,042............ I just hope it will not end up in the same unfortunate category of so many that I associate with the article I wrote on Hub Pages, "A Call To Arms... Sort Of" ............................ horrible crimes against all of cinema..................just horrible.

Thank goodness that Lucas boy is no longer in charge of this here Star Wars dog, the poor thing was suffering from over-exposure, fed all the wrong dry, lifeless, foodstuffs , and all he cared about was buying new toys for it, in the hope that would be enough. Anyway one day he got bored and he locked it on a cupboard until Disney called animal welfare at took over, look for yourself just open up and....OMG! PUPPIES EVERYWHERE! WHERE DID THESE PUPPIES COME FROM?? NO-ONE IS GOING TO ABLE TO CONTROL THEM!! ...And that ladies and gennelman is a laboured metaphor..Ithangew..
