PS4: A closer look at Sony's next-gen games line-up

Here's an overview of new projects on the horizon

PlayStation 4 is finally here and after Sony's announcement in mid-February, we now know a lot more about how the future of PS4 is shaping up. Although we've yet to see the final design of the console itself we know the PS4 will have PC based architecture, a new controller, a PS4 Eye camera, cloud based game sampling and a whole heap of other details. Be sure to check out our PlayStation 4 hub page for full details and all the very latest.

But ultimately any new console lives or dies by its games and so here's a further look at the first wave of games announced for the platform.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

PlayStation 4 Screenshot
Its announcement may have been leakier than a colander coracle but there's little doubt that the PS4 was going to get its own Assassin's game. What was a slight surprise was the setting, a real shiver-me-timbers piratical tale that had us reaching for our big book o' pirate curse words. Still, the omens look promising, set in 1715, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will involve free-form piratical adventures set in the vast tropical playground of the Caribbean, with Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas among the many islands set to feature. Popular AC3 prologue Haytham Kenway's dad Edward is set to star in a buccaneering romp more than worthy of a jig on a dead man's chest. See our Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag preview for full details.

Battlefield 4

PlayStation 4 Screenshot
EA's all-action battlefield general will be a huge deal for PS4 as it continues its long-standing arms race with Call of Duty. What does the future hold? Enhanced graphics, better connectivity, more sharing? Certainly all of the above and while it's difficult to predict absolute certainties, it will undoubtedly be a bigger and bolder project.

Diablo III

PlayStation 4 Screenshot
Blizzard's all-conquering all-clicking Diablo 3 RPG comes to the PS4 and the promise it holds is immense. Cracking four-player co-op action is certainly in prospect, but crucially, what part will the new DualShock pad 4 play? PlayStation 4 fans can content themselves with knowing that they'll be grabbing one of the world's premier RPGs and an inferno of demon battling action is on the way.

Destiny

PlayStation 4 Screenshot
The Halo creators have their decree absolute from Microsoft and have been plotting an epic persistent co-operative sci-fi shooter that will keep gamers engaged for possibly the next ten years. The good news for PlayStation fans is that their platform gets exclusive PlayStation 4 content and features, although they remain unspecified at this time. Bungie co-founder Jason Jones has described the game as 'amazing on PlayStation 4' and said of the console itself "it's a great piece of gear". Exciting times indeed for PlayStation fans, with Destiny certainly one of the stand-out titles on the platform. Check out our full Destiny Preview for the very latest.

Deep Down

PlayStation 4 Screenshot
Currently a working title, Deep Down is Capcom's cinematic looking dungeon delver and owes perhaps more than a little influence to its recent hit Dragon's Dogma. It was announced by Yoshinori Ono, the face of Street Fighter IV and is being developed on a new Panta Rhei engine which is specifically designed to take advantage of the next gen hardware. From the little of Deep Down we've seen, classic dungeon crawling will be married with co-op as an important feature, with players able to request help from their friends when facing particularly challenging foes.

Watchdogs, the witcher,, knack, battlefield 4 and infamous are on my radar. Quite a nice line-up really.

I'm just hoping for GTA 5, every GTA game has had notorious problems with the graphics like draw distance and texture pop in. It's not a deal breaker but it just break's the immersion.

Nothing on this list makes me go wow i need to get that game or wow that looks so awesome i must get a PS4, everything looks like curent gen tech but with a few extra options turned on!! I'll just stick to the PC where i always get those extra options to play around with anyway!

not a bad line up and we still have e3 to go.also the head of gamestop said the ps4 will defenitly be launching worldwide this year

Agreed with patiotom, it looks the same as the WiiU lineup in that there's not enough reason to buy. Same old ploys and toys, nothing exceptional. Still no need to own one over a PC.

So far its looking like a solid launch line-up with several games I have my eye on and we have yet to see what E3 will bring, i'm expecting at least a few more titles i'd be interested in announced.
It's a welcome change from the sparse PS3 launch. Looks like Sony has the intention of getting the ball rolling from the get go this time round, with a nice variety to choose from.

    2013 is shaping up nicely

Killzone, Drive Club, Batman Arkham Origins, Watch Dogs, Destiny, Infamous, the Witness... But pretty much everything in the lineup is looking good.

Even Assassin's Creed could be interesting this year, as the naval combat was considered by many to be the best thing in AC3. I'll most likely get BF4 and/or Infinity Ward's next CoD for the PC.

Your optimism is not wanted round these parts. Away with you!

I'm pretty sure nobody buys a console on launch because of the release line-up. If ones brain can't see beyond a few months then you would definitely not buy one. If, on the other hand, you are likely to keep said next gen console (either of the big 2) for the long run then why not get in there early doors? If you've got disposable income and remove the financial logic that says wait, get spending I say.

I'm really interested on BF4 but knowing there's going to be tomes of map pack after release puts me off. I don't mind dlc, but I don't like having to buy it to keep up or make sure that I can get a game when I do fancy a blast.

The 'ill just stick to my pc' comments are so boring and predictable. Its a games console, it isnt trying to be a pc! If you want pc gaming experience stick to that, but quit being whiny little faggots and bad mouthing a console that hasnt even been fully revealed yet. I used to be a PC gamer and could list 1001 reasons to choose a console over a computer if I wanted, and probably the same number again to choose a pc over consoles (the total war series being about 10 of those reasons alone). Stop comparing the two, you may as well compare planes and boats, the two are a world apart.

Deep down is a big yes for me, if its anything like dragons dogma i'll love it, Assassins creed black flag, if i can roam about on a boat like i could in something like say...windwaker then i'll get alot of enjoyment. Watch dogs, looks interesting and so i'll give it a bash. Drive club im waiting to hear more on but i tend to get at least 1 racer per gen so its got a chance. Desting looks very interesting to me. Diablo 3 i was kinda put off the pc version but a mate of mine loves the top down clicky games so i'll take a peek at it. if theres a new batman arkham game i'll get that no doubt.

I really hope GTA 5 shows up on it too but if it dont ive gotta wait for the pc version anyway. Im a pc gamer atm but i really miss having a console, they are good for just slumping down in front of and sinking hours into.

Couldn't agree anymore. Besides the lack of games and expense of the console when it's new out, I'd rather give it a year to see how the differences between he PS4 and 720 play out before I commit to one, as I'm no fanboy so I'm not committed yet and I don't fancy getting both of them.

Good advice but do you really need a year? As soon as Microsoft reveals the spec for their next console we should be able to have a pretty good idea how things will pan out. I don't want to get both MS and Sony consoles (still may get a Gaming PC instead) but will probably pick up a Wii-U for the family-friendly content as it price drops.

I don't think there will be much of a difference in gaming quality for Sony/Microsoft next gen (at least not as big as compared to a high-end PC) I suspect Microsoft is going to be pushing interactive TV/Windows 8 integration big time. It is a far bigger market than Gaming alone. Sony seems to be focusing on gaming. I still don't know which I prefer  because I believe Kinect is going to be brilliant for interactive TV yet I adore Sony titles.

I can't say there's a system seller there at all, but a decent supply of third party and first party games.

Of course alan can't not mention the Wii U's launch lineup, even though he bought one knowing what the launch titles were (fair enough that Rayman got massively delayed and W101 and Pikmin are still absent). Just goes to show the importance of third parties, hopefully retailers/publishers aren't going to f**k over the early adopters with ridiculous prices for the first four months.

I'm not sure what we'll see in terms of the PS3/360 being dropped in favour of the PS4/720. The longer they keep going will definitely help the Wii U, but there are so many consoles out there now. Can developers afford to sell to a potential market of less than 10m people when a lot are struggling selling to 150m? Sony/MS will also be making money on the 360/PS3 hardware, as opposed to (in all likelihood) taking a fairly big hit on their new consoles.

While they keep making 360/PS3 versions of the big games, I'm not sure how many people will bother upgrading.

Like the look of them all except Ass Creed 4 and BF4, I imagine those two will be another big step back going on their previous games.

I don't know what this magical killer app that people always go on about is. Personally I'd rather just wait til a decent library has been built up, more games, cheaper games, likely a cheaper console too.

I'll definitely be giving AC4 a miss, I was done with that franchise at Brotherhood.

Battlefield doesn't really tickle my fancy anymore. It was so broken online for months on end I gave up and sold it. You can't have an online shooter with massive lag, it's just not acceptable. There's nothing that is going to convince me otherwise unless everyone says it works 100% of the time. It just p**sed me off no end, which isn't fun in anyone's books.

i'm sorry i thought this was about the ps4?

there are new ip's and i'm not saying some dont look fantastic but most seem destined for last gen systems so many people may have already bought them by the time the other next gen systems launch.

So basically, I have to pay £400 pounds, for the pleasure to play games I could play on my PS3 albeit with shinier graphics. The next generation seems to be heading down the same derivative path that has defined the end of the current generation. Third person action gears of war/batman/uncharted hybrids or brown corridor shooters. There needs to be some innovation methinks before I will consider upgrading.

Yes, that's kind of how console launches are going to be in a day where tech is designed for multiplatform development. There will be 2 exclusive new ip's, one of which will be making it to launch, and we havent had e3 or gamescom yet. And if the ps4 just launches with these, it would be fantastic. Any criticism in the form of "more of the same" is empty criticism. Because besides how early it is, unless we are jumping from sprites to polygons, generally, that's what we're going to get. What were you expecting? Besides the switch from 2d to 3d, do you know what the exception is? Wii sports. Is that what everyone was hoping for? Wii sports?

We got lots of amazing innovative games this generation that changed what we thought games could be, many of which we owe to Sony, but we didn't get these at launch. We all want more new things, but as far as early games designed just to move some units and represent the experience? Sony are doing surprisingly well. It's not all shooters. It's not all "mature". It's not all family friendly.

Hmm... I think a nerve was struck. Sorry mate, they're not that far apart. If I don't see anything that I can't expect to play in all ways better on my PC then it's a no-buy from me. It was the same problem I had with the PS3/XBOX360. I'm willing to give Sony benefit of the doubt, but it does in fact look like more of the same.

  42. toaplan on 2 Apr '13 said:

^ I personally find the PC good mainly just for mouse & keyboard-optimized stuff like FPS-games and strategy games. Everything else I'd rather get on a Playstation Blu-Ray disc that is collectable and resaleable. Especially as the brand new PS4 will catch up with the PC graphically and surpass at least ordinary gaming PCs, like my once-powerful PC with its 2-year-old GPU.

Besides, only about half of the games listed in the article will be coming to the PC, so if you want to play them, the PC isn't even an option. Missing out on (not just the PS exclusives, but also...) some of the big multiplatform games to me is the Achilles Heel of the PC as a gaming machine. Destiny (and GTA V!!!) has not been announced for the PC, Final Fantasy Next is unlikely. During the couple of years that I was a PC-only gamer, the multiplatform no-shows on the PC were very disappointing. Red Dead Redemption and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 were some of the worst cases, SSX never showing up on the PC was probably the final straw that brought me back to the PS.

Also, while some of the PS4 games will be "more of the same but prettier", not all will be. Destiny should be a good example, and calling it just another sci-fi FPS would be hasty.

Only The Witcher 3, Killzone and Infamous would warrant me buying a PS4. Watch Dogs, AC 4 and Batman(if there is one) will be on the PS3 so I'll buy them for the PS3. I doubt there is much difference with the games that are released on PS3 and PS4. Due to that Not enough here for me to pay the high price and want to buy a PS4 on day one. I'll give it a year max and see what happens. The first year of an consoles life is always the worse due to the lack of games and high price tag. PS4 will be no different.

They are multitudes apart. The only similarity the ps4 has with a pc is that they both play games/media, that is where the line is drawn. The ps4 is a games console, a PC is a multifunctional device to surf the internet, do work, listen to music, play games etc etc. You cannot go out and buy a computer (or build one for that matter) for under £400 (my estimate at the ps3's cost) and expect it to play games of the same calibre, or play games at all for that matter. If you own a gaming rig then fantastic, but to suggest that it is a viable alternative to a console is absurd, because it is a completely different object in a different market. Consoles and PC's have different games, they have different purposes, they have different requirements. PC gaming is for all intensive purposes, is as different an entity to console gaming as console gaming is to mobile gaming.

  49. kirankara on 3 Apr '13 said:

They're really not that far apart.

Consoles have all the features you mentioned you to distinguish them from PC. In many ways consoles are more of media hub than PC's are these days. How many use Netflix on consoles these days? What about ps3 and blu ray? Then there's Facebook integration , music streaming etc

Ms's entire business model around Xbox seems to depend on them integrating Xbox as a media hub.
I only use my PC for gaming basically, it can be used for other things, but rarely is.
The new consoles are just PC's with a custom os and uniform architecture
The only valid point you raise, is that you will struggle to build PC with these equivalent specs for console price. That's partly cause Sony will absorb part of cost, and you can't buy PC components in bulk price like Sony do

Black Flag isn't a true next gen game , is it? From what they've said, it's primarily a hybrid PS3/360/next gen game, with possibly, HD textures, improved lighting bolted on for the next gen consoles and PC version.

The PS4 in-house games and next gen only games like Thief, are likely to be the ones that demo the new platform.
