Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection 'too big' for Xbox 360 release, explains Kojima

Series creator suggests next-gen Xbox release is a possibility

Hideo Kojima has explained why upcoming Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection won't be released on Xbox 360.

Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection Screenshot
Speaking on the latest episode of his radio show (translated by Kotaku), Kojima cited the size of PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 as the primary reason.

"I'm sorry to say an Xbox 360 version isn't being released, because an Xbox 360 version of MGS4 hasn't gone on sale," he explained. "To explain the situation, the amount of data in MGS4 is just too enormous."

Kojima went on to point out that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was released on Sony's Blu-ray disc, which is capable of storing substantially more data than the Xbox 360 DVDs. According to Kojima it would take seven discs to hold the game.

"I want to put [The Legacy Collection] out," Kojima added, "but we won't be releasing it."

Kojima suggested a next-gen release of Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection as a possibility.

"When it's the next [Xbox] console, maybe we can release [The Legacy Collection]," he said. "If we released a version on the Xbox 360 without MGS4, then it's not The Legacy Collection."

The collection is expected to be available in Japan in June. It will include: Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 (which includes the original MSX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2), Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions and Metal Gear Solid 4: Trophy Edition.

Personally find them boring to play and not good enough visually too.

Oh well, maybe the next version might change that!

I don't think they are crap but aside from the PSOne MGS and Snake Eater I didn't find the others as epic as I would have expected, anywhere near in fact...

    ha,what a load of s**t

There are many ways to get around it,i mean they could even do what they did to the HD collection in Japan and split them

you could even take away MGS2,3 and PW for the 360 release as they are available in the HD collection,I'd be fine with that as i already have them

and just release MGS4 and 1 as a 3 or 4 disc job(L.A Noire and Lost Odyssey were both 4 discs)

just excuses to not tell us the real reason(they can't be arsed)

@Dodo-not really sure what you mean, people have large HDDs for the 360,GoD has L.A. Noire and other large games....and to be honest my internet is faster at downloading on my 360 than it is on my PS3(which also has to install)

Also to note,17 gig on the PS3 does not mean the same game will be 17gig on the 360,lots of compressing goes on

That's what I never understood. Absolution is on xbox so how the hell does the ps download get that big? Did they hid a couple of films in there, maybe a porn version of hitman dubbed into swedish? How is that larger than something like skyrim or crysis etc?

I mean I'm yet to download or install anything that big on 360 yet and I'm glad because normally my download speeds aren't that hot so the smaller the better for me.

I've only had my 360 for a year though so maybe it's just I've not come across the bigger games yet.

Frankly, that doesn't sound much like a Legacy Collection to me. What if they just make it Metal Gear 1 and 2 and MGS4 to save even more space on Microsoft's little 9GB DVD discs.

  13. karkify on 2 May '13 said:

Would add that some of that space was used for MGO, which is now gone. Even still, it takes up a fair amount of space. I don't see the issue tbh, who the hell would want to play it over 7 discs? Who's to say it's even possible to split the game up over that many discs? To bring it into the realms of "fanboys", I'm sure most complainers just want it on there to say "lol at ps3 owners". Least the guys being somewhat honest about the situation.

On another note, what of MGS1 in 360?

It's not as simple as that, for example large parts of the game code were duplicated on the blu-ray to cope with slow read times, if you've got lots of space why not use it and that's exactly what they did, no need to compress if you don't need to.

fair point but did you read the article?

He said it wouldn't be a legacy collection with a game missing, so why would they then take out 3 and release it as a legacy collection? :?

RAGE was over 20gig, spread over 3 discs, and it wasn't too much of a hassle and apparently it was the superior version (that's just going hearsay though as I've not played it on the PS3).

And 17GB for Hitman on the PS3?! That's over twice the size of the 360 version with no noticeable difference. I do think that blu ray has just given developers an excuse not to optimise properly for the PS3. How are the loading times in it?

So you just want MGS collection 2 then as it wouldn't exactly be the legacy collection if they cut things out. Plus it is likely to be about 7-8 discs unless they cut things out or over compress the thing which sadly happens all too often.

The 360 versions of games often lack the DTS audio to decrease disc space which is a shame if you have a decent audio system connected to your console.

360 version of Hitman has Dolby Digital audio options, the PS3 version has Dolby Digital, DTS, 5.1LPCM & 7.1LPCM the difference in audio quality is clear if you have the right set up.

    Was it? Bloody hell.

Load times are ok but I'm buggered if I can tell the cutscenes are of higher quality than you tend to get on 360. It's usually better quality cutscenes and more sound options that the bluray is used for.

@Toasted: Yeah I'm just playing it through the TV speaker, all them options are wasted on me :)

Well, I have it on the 360 and I'm a PS Plus subscriber so I guess I can do a compare and contrast, but I'm not really sure I care enough about this to wait for a 3 hour download. Maybe I can queue it through the PSN store...

    I have no idea.

But I do know that is often the reason PS3 games are larger than their 360 counterparts. I would guess the rest is due to using less compression because they don't have to, what I do know is that the size difference is normally due to something like audio or less compression rather than developers just not optimising the PS3 version.

It would take 5-6 disks just to fit MGS4 alone, thank M$ for that decision. I no longer support Kojimas work, so personally I can care less what he does these days, specially now that he has been dismantling the MG franchise, and the name. MG Rising was a bad joke, with part of it being in the hands of Platinum Games. :|

microsoft's licensing model is per disc, so the more discs a release has, the bigger the xbox licensing cost. MGS4 has about 30gigs of cutscenes. i thought this had only been confirmed for japan anyway?. and the chances of it selling in any quantity on x360 there is negligible.

I was thinking the same thing. With Twin Snakes.

Nintendo have the licence to TS, that's why it's not part of the set and why they're not remaking or releasing it at any point. Only a full MGS remake would be possible, and Kojima said he'd like to do it at some point.
