We actually had a client that judged the success of their online marketing by how much their phone rang. There was no real data to tie their spend to actual success or failure! Sometimes you have to “go with your gut” (so to speak) when it comes to sales, there are other times when logic and reason should take over.

Recently, Ipsos posted results of a survey noting several interesting metrics about time spent using social media. In short, usage is drastically increasing among business owners and executives. However, we geeks fear a primary component of social media is being ignored.

We’ll start by saying we geeks aren’t a social media agency, but we have skin in this game. Why? We provide digital media managed services, or in other words, we are digital geeks that act directly on a business’ behalf. Therefore, we must be on top of our geekly game at all times. These are some of the things we see going wrong in Social Media. Don’t say we didn’t warn you...

We took some time to ask executives over a cup of coffee, what 2013 looked like when it came to their marketing plan. Many businesses fail to leverage their business data, but those that do can reap large rewards. You can identify your market demographics, identify buyers and garner trends that may help you market your business in new ways. There is a catch: the data gathered must be statistically valid. If you are lumping all this rich multidimensional data together you are creating statistically invalid results.

Purporting to be a “Social Media Expert” isn’t unusual in the marketing world. It has been part of the game for a few years now. But as social media’s relevance reaches an all-time high, these bold claims of social media expertise have become increasingly more dangerous to clients. Why? Because traditional marketing backgrounds and traditional agency experience have nothing to do with digital expertise as a whole -- and they especially have nothing to do with being a social media expert.
