UPS Expands London 2012 Fleet

New additions to alternative fuel fleet include biomethane and electric vehicles that will remain in the UK long after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games conclude

UPS recently announced the addition of 10 dual-fuel biomethane-diesel vehicles to its dedicated London 2012 fleet. The vehicles, currently stationed at UPS's hub in Tamworth, are part of UPS's 2,500-strong global alternative fuel fleet.

Biomethane is a renewable energy source produced from organic waste, and it provides a number of environmental benefits by reducing the need for fossil fuels. It can be obtained via landfills or by using an anaerobic digester to break down organic waste.

UPS's biomethane dual-fuel vehicles will expand the company's alternative fuel vehicle fleet delivering to official London 2012 venues and will remain in the UK years after the Games conclude, leaving an important legacy for the UK. UPS's green fleet for London 2012 also includes 5 electric vehicles operating out of UPS's key central London facilities. The London biomethane vehicles are the first of their kind in UPS's global fleet.

Alternative fuel is one of several new technologies, protocols and procedures that UPS is introducing to the United Kingdom as part of its London 2012 sustainability strategy. To ensure UPS can go the extra mile and deliver a sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is rolling out:

• Alternative modes transport for deliveries, including a bicycle programme and on-foot deliveries as well as use of the River Thames for transporting items to the Olympic and Paralympic Village
  
  
• Telematics technology to help optimise routes and efficiency, slash energy consumption and improve customer service and driver safety
  
  
• A commitment to being carbon neutral in UPS operations, achieved through rigorous measurement and management of any carbon emissions associated with delivering London 2012, and then mitigation of any carbon emissions that cannot be managed out
  
  
• Other initiatives such as responsible waste management, participation in employee fitness programmes and 'green' volunteer initiatives

As the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, UPS is responsible for virtually all the distribution and logistics services for the London 2012 Olympic Games. This includes the handling of millions items, including 1 million pieces of sporting equipment.
