UPS Supports Bishan Home in Singapore with US$70,000 Grant

Singapore, March 31, 2011

Grant Supports Enhancements to Bishan Home's Care Giving Facilities and Residents' Therapy Care

The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS, provided a US$70,000 Community Involvement Grant to the Bishan Home for the intellectually disabled. The grant will be used to purchase hospital beds and geriatric chairs which can be reclined or lowered to a position to provide more comfort and ease of movement for the home's elderly residents, as well as go toward funding a new therapy programme for the home's residents and day activity clients.

"UPS believes it is important to contribute to the local community where we live and work," said Greg Carstens, managing director, UPS Singapore. "UPS has been actively involved with the Bishan Home since 2007. Throughout these years, nearly 400 UPS employees have dedicated more than 1,600 hours to actively volunteer and participate in activities with the home's residents and staff," he added.

Since 2007, The UPS Foundation has contributed three grants to the Bishan Home totaling approximately US$130,000. The Foundation's latest grant of US$70,000 represents its largest award ever donated to the Bishan Home. The grants have gone toward providing improved facilities and care to enhance the well-being, functionality and safety of the home for residents.

The grant will also be used to fund an improvement program for its therapy services with the help of professional advice and help from Tan Tock Seng Hospital's Physiotherapy Department. The program will initially involve an audit of the home's existing therapy program and then training the home's two physiotherapy aides to undertake assessment, management and evaluation phases of the treatment process for over half of its residents. It will also document an instruction training manual of this process.

"The donation from The UPS Foundation comes at an opportune time. It enables us to further improve our facilities and services for our ageing resident population. We feel truly blessed that UPS shares and supports our mission to enhance the quality of life for the intellectually disabled," said Dennis Lim, CEO, Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled. "It is motivating knowing that we are not alone in our journey of service."

Founded in 1951 and based in Atlanta, The UPS Foundation's major initiatives include programs that support community safety, non-profit effectiveness, economic and global literacy, environmental sustainability and diversity. The UPS Foundation pursues these initiatives by identifying specific projects where its support can help produce a measurable social impact.

In 2010, The UPS Foundation donated US$95 million to charitable organizations worldwide. These funds benefit organizations and programs such as the Bishan Home and provide support for building stronger communities.
