Curiosity Uncovered: We discover what's in the cube

Reporting live from Molyneux's App Store experiment

Woah!

After a bit of a hiatus there's some huge news for you.

WE ARE DOWN TO THE FINAL FIFTY LAYERS

Word to the wise: you need to update Curiosity on the App Store / Google Play in order to reach the final fifty layers.

22 Cans has confirmed the news via a video sent to CVG, and the studio has also offered us the chance to interview its co-founder Peter Molyneux, which you can read below the video.

Stuck in the middle with you

An interview with Peter Molyneux

by Rob Crossley

CVG: Today marks the countdown to the final 50 layers remaining on Curiosity. Did you always have a plan for how many layers there were going to be in the end?

MOLYNEUX: Well yes and no. No, in as much as, we thought to ourselves that if Curiosity went on for about six months then people would just get bored with it, and we really wanted the world to get to the middle, because what's in the middle is something that's truly exciting and life changing.

If this just carries on for another year, then people are just going to lose interest and - justifiably - would turn to us and say "you cheating bastards there's no middle is there!"

But we never believed we would be where we are now which is past 270 layers now. We're talking about 25 billion cubes destroyed so far. That is a vast number. If one person had to do that it would take them 806 years to do it. There's been about five million different users involved in the experiment, with about 100 million cublets destroyed per day.

"We've learnt that people like relaxing games. You don't have to pump adrenaline through gamers 24 hours per day"
So, just to clarify, when Curiosity started was there an overall target for how many layers it would take to get to the middle?

Well this is part of the experiment. We gave people something unimaginably difficult to get through and then saw how it went. At the time, the team were each betting on how many layers people would get through [before applying the Final 50 update]; some said five layers and others said five hundred.

What is astounding is how quickly things moved at first. We thought things would ramp up slowly over the months. If you look at how quickly mobile games usually progress in terms of interest, usually they start out slow in the first three months.

It just goes to show that when you have something different and intriguing, then that is pretty exciting.

Curiosity Screenshot
This has been an experiment for fans of the game, but also for yourself and your team too. What lessons have you learned from Curiosity?

Well, we've got the Godus project on the go right now, and we always knew we would be working on reinventing the god game genre. We have taken specific things from Curiosity and have added that into Godus, like giving people the chance to interact together. We've also learnt that people like relaxing games. You don't have to pump adrenaline through gamers 24 hours per day.

We also learnt a lot about what to do right with servers, and what to do wrong. I think EA fell into exactly the same trap as we did with server issues, when they released SimCity. There was a lot of learning from us on that side of things, about what to get right and what not to get right.

But what really took us by surprise is how much users like to express themselves. There were tonnes of images on Curiosity - maybe some of them you wouldn't want to see (laughs) - but a lot of it absolutely charming.

" I was also amazed by a group of Italians who set out to turn all the penis drawings into palm trees."
I remember one person went on there and sketched the Twin Towers. Then someone else drew a plane crashing into them. And then someone changed all that into a big peace sign. I mean, all of these live commentaries are fascinating.

If you limit people's ability to communicate, then they find other ways. We've been astounded by that. I was also amazed by a group of Italians who set out to turn all the penis drawings into palm trees.

So, I've got to ask: Can you give us any clues about what's inside the cube? You said it was life-changing, but how?

There are only three people in the world that know what's in the cube. Myself, the sound engineer who recorded the sounds of the final video and one other person.

The answer to what's inside the cube is as interesting as the journey to the centre. What's in there is as experimental and thought-provoking as the whole game. It is definitely life-changing, by any measure, and it's only possible into today's world.

When did you get the idea about what's inside the cube?

The idea came before the execution. My idea was; if you have something so valuable, something that's only for one single individual, how do you give that away in a manner that's intriguing?

Curiosity Screenshot

"I'm definitely not saying no to developing on next-gen consoles"
Finally, there's a lot of excitement in the air about next gen systems, with the PS4 and Next Xbox launching this year. Are you considering developing for those consoles, or would you rather stick to mobiles, tablets and PC?

I think the really interesting thing about the consoles is how they're moving towards the PC and mobile models. And there are suddenly community-based ideas like the Share button on the PS4 and the Wii U's Miiverse community. And of course, I'm excited as anyone else about the next Xbox.

So, I'm definitely not saying no to developing on next-gen consoles. What I will say is that, these days there is an insane number of devices to develop for. We used to have PlayStation, Xbox, and a Nintendo console if you were feeling brave. We didn't even really have PC. Today there's lots of devices that are successful.

I found it to be a horrible game. Unless I'm missing something, you simply tap the screen to eliminates mini green cubes from the larger green cube. Each destroyed mini-cube makes a musical sound which can be stringed tother is so desired; however, each sound is randomly generated so creating a harmony tends to be a fluke. Moreover, the game isn't really about making music anyway, it about breaking cubes by tapping them. Am I missing something? If not I'll wait and let the people who enjoy it do the hard work and test my luck discovering whats inside closer to its completion.

  20. AvatarIII on 7 Nov '12 said:

I have a theory that all the issues that we are getting with curiosity are because curiosity in itself is an app designed to teach 22cans how to not have the same issues with later "experiments" and the final game.

Everything in the app works for me, after a few attempts and a bit of patience, the only thing that bugs me is when clearing a screen trying to get the block under the menu button is a nightmare, I have to try and break that space first and position it under the menu button.

I can see myself getting bored pretty quickly, I haven't even earned enough for the iron chisel yet, and find it hard to believe that using the iron chisel for only 4 minutes or whatever will be-able to recoup the cost of buying it.

This game (is it a game? I don't want to call it an experiment) is bizarrely compelling, but it's ruined by the facebook button.

Having accumulated a nice 20 x multiplier, I'm happily chipping away on quite the hot streak, and all of a sudden I get the dreaded white screen 'o' death having accidentally pressed the FB button! I lose my coins and multiplier and it soo annoying!

It's completely avoidable too - either make the FB button an option on the menu bit or simply make the lag between the FB button being active and inactive longer than a microsecond - there is not one person on the planet who will so want to login to FB that they'll lose patience at having to wait 3 seconds. However, there are loads of people who'll accidentally press that button as they're frantically trying to keep their chain going. Sort it out Molyneux!

    Getting annoyed....

*I had nearly 90,000 coins last night. Tonight I have just 50,000.
*My best chain was 118970 but none of those coins made it into my account. I was still on 48,000 or summink. So I have a high score bigger than the most amount of coins I've ever had and twice as big as my current amount.
*Not all the data is loading, I can see more data from far out than when I zoom in to join in.

I am intrigued by the experiment, but the buggyness is not giving me any pay off. Seriously - the rewards are hardly worth it as it is, but bugging out and making me lose my sense of achievement or ability to properly explore is seriously stupid!

I'm gonna start participating less and watch from afar. But if everyone does that, I'll be amazed if level 2 is finished, let alone any further levels. Another Molineux disappointment - don't know why I'm surprised. :(

Na, that is it, I've given up on Curiosity. I'd seen on CVG that the cube had changed to the next level and was now a burgundy colour. But when I logged on it was still the same sickly green from the day before.

O.K, I thought.....All the faces seemed to be empty, so I though I'd write the biggest message I could be bothered to. It said "Fu*k you Peter Molyneux". Now you can call me childish, but I felt I needed to get my point across.

Anyways....halfway through the cube updates to the Burgundy colour, I knew it was supposed to be, then BANG....all of a sudden it updates and everything I've written (and believe me it was rather large) was obliterated.

It made me realize that what ever you've tapped away, has probably been done before, only the server hasn't updated your s**tty client yet.

Damm you Curiosity, I spent an hour on writing that Peter Molyneux abuse.......thats it.....I'm out.

  46. karkify on 11 Nov '12 said:

To think this is fueled by peoples greed and want for fame. Why else would people spend so much time tapping away? A part of me hopes the final video is just Mr. Molyneux standing bare naked, pointing to his dong with one hand, and giving the middle finger with the other with a text box that reads "SUCK THIS, SUCKER".

I have an iPhone and can see 5 sides of pics and one dull brown one appearing. The refresh is rubbish. I zoom in and the blocks appear and disappear like rubbish pop up buildings from gta3 (I love gta but the pop up was rubbish sometimes). I can see from far out something has been written or the cube is mostly tapped away, but zooming in - I find that detail disappear and the block has huge areas to tap.
Each layer of zoom seems to need its own refresh and that takes minutes to do if it even does. Not up to the job I'm afraid. Its Really winding me up. Their servers are not up to it and they need to pause the game whist they make updates.

Or something like that. Triggering a nuclear bomb, somewhere. Killing the last dodo, with a time machine. Something nasty.

Every single player before will be responsible, too, in a way. So, Peter may not have been over-promising.

The current text on the cube is from the Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.
Not sure is this is relevant or important but...

It kind of worries me that there seems to be a lack of thematic connection between the layers....you'd think the layers related to the studio and future projects would be the first ones to get out of the way right?

How many people are still playing this thing? Should round them all up and send them down a mine shaft to chisel for gold. They could get fit and rich at the same time.

Is this blog a little futile ?

There are a few million ppl playing this game. And only one person will see whats in the cube? so this blog will not find out whats in the cube.

Theres a good chance that it will never end, from it being way to big, and ppl get bored etc.

And, I tell you, if i was the last person to open said cube. i wouldn't tell anyone, but made sure i recorded it. and sell the secret via ebay auction - or by some other means of everyone playing to chip in 1 dollar - after a few million - i'd release the answer :P

who ever is last to open the cube. will be very rich. and i think thats what 22cans want. how else is the middle of the cube worth it ?

1973 layers left, and you're done. I find this demoralizing.

    Good luck... =/

@Gavin Powell. There is only one problem with your idea of putting the video link on eBay: the rules of the game are

"However, the video link information should not be traded for any personal monetary gain."

    Good luck

Brilliant idea. Personally I think this will never make it to the end as people will get more and more bored and there just won't be enough people willing to waste life chipping away at some s**tty app.

Dude - repetitive mindless actions is what gaming has been about for a very long time - don't knock it. :P

I tried this on the weekend and it is a cool idea but dull as dishwater.
Reminds me of the kid who made a million selling pixel space advertising to companies.

However I agree with what others have said - most are not going to be arsed to see this to completion. Best to just leave it to the obsessive-compulsive until the last layer then everyone ram on and... um down the server again

I havn't really invested in this but it's been a total and utter success hilariously. People are curious and continue to be. Mystery is something games need more of these days.

If you are saying what I think you are saying then that is way too profound for a thread about a "game" like this one ;)
