The app provides a long overdue freshen-up to the service, which first launched on Sony's console in November 2010.

HD streaming is now available, while other new features include an optimised user interface and an improved search function and recommendation engine.

Sony Computer Entertainment UK MD Fergal Gara said: "LoveFilm has been a fantastic part of the services offering on PlayStation 3 since 2010. Now with a brand new improved app coming first to PlayStation 3 plus the addition of HD content, this is a huge enhancement to the PlayStation entertainment portfolio and even more relevant for our millions of UK customers."

I never knew the PS3 app didn't offer HD streaming, glad they've fixed the UI though it was terrible and is still is a mess on Smart TVs. The Wii U version has been my favourite :) Looks like the PS3 one has the same design now.

But I want it to be a games machine and a games machine only. If it doesn't sell me pizzas I'm not happy.

That's 1920x1080 pixels then. Or is it pretend HD?

The fact is states 'HD' and not 'Full HD' suggests to me that it is 720p. Shame this didn't come sooner as I didn't subscribe beyond the 30 free days due to Netflix being a far better service on the PS3 (UI and picture quality).

Just in time for the demise of the PS3 and the launch of the PS4 - not bad going

Online delivery systems and services inc the companies that control them really need to play faster catch up!

I'm not sure about the PS3 one now they've updated it but I know the Wii U version does 1080p streaming, so maybe the PS3 one does now too?

Not used Lovefilm since I had a free trial a couple of years back. I have been using Netflix and the quality is great for some of the newer films, I've watched quitr]e a few films I probably wouldn't have bothered with, so for 6 sheets a month its not a bad investment. I'm 10 episodes inti Firefly, I don't want it to end.

Eventually found the information on lovefilm's website. It's 720p only, comes with Dolby Digital 5.1.
Lovefilm only offers 1080p to PC desktops, it doesnt mention any HD service at all for wii/wii u.
Is PS3 too weak to decode compressed 1080p streams?

BTW it says you need 4mbps + connection for 720p, 12mbps+ for 1080p.

Lovefilm delivers 1080p video on Wii U and PC, while also topping out at 720p on the 360 (though, again, we believe that downscaled 1080p encodes are being processed).
