Next Xbox event on May 21, Microsoft confirms

Next gen system to be revealed for the first time at Microsoft's Xbox campus

Microsoft has brought an end to months of speculation by announcing that it will unveil its Next Xbox plans at a special one-off press conference on May 21.

Xbox 720 / Durango Screenshot
The event, held three weeks before E3, will take place at Microsoft's Redmond campus and will be hosted by Don Mattrick, the president of Interactive Entertainment at Microsoft.

Invites have been sent to specialist and national press as, behind the scenes, Microsoft prepares for a string of announcements in an attempt to steal Sony and Nintendo's thunder in the build up to E3.

Below is an image of the flyers, which have been emailed to select press outlets, publishers, developers and analysts.

Proceedings will begin at 10am local time, which translates to 6pm in the UK. A live stream will be available on Xbox.com, Xbox Live and - exclusively for North America - broadcast on Spike TV.

In a message published by Xbox Live executive Larry Hryb, Microsoft will use the May 21 event to "share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future".

"Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we'll continue the conversation and showcase our full line-up of blockbuster games.

"We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we've been working on."

CVG understands that Microsoft's initial intention was to reveal its Next Xbox towards the end of April. Plans were halted, however, and CVG was told by people connected to the matter that the show was delayed.

Among a string of triple-A game announcements, Microsoft is expected to disclose a key partnership with at least one major publisher. CVG has been told that EA will be revealed as one Xbox partner and will support the platform with exclusive content - though whether this is full games or DLC is unclear (the latter would be unlikely).

The event follows Sony's PlayStation 4 reveal, which took place on February 20 in New York and - despite a positive review from CVG - was met with equal praise and criticism.

Microsoft has, by contrast, faced more significant challenges in the build up to its own press conference.

The unpopular rumour that the next Xbox will prohibit pre-owned content has not yet been addressed by the company.

Meanwhile, another damaging rumour that remains unaddressed is that the next Xbox will require an always online internet connection.

Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth publicly defended such a policy - implying, but not confirming, that the rumours were genuine - but departed from Microsoft days later following a vitriolic reaction from the community.

It is not known whether Microsoft will address these issues before its press conference.

Major Nelson tweeted during the PS4 conference about Sony announcing a new console without actually showing a new console, I'd be very surprised if Microsoft did the same thing.

I don't think they can afford to hold back, announcing in May then launching in November doesn't sound like enough time to build hype and demonstrate key features if they're gonna drip feed information as you suggest.

    Expect an info dump.

Be interesting to find out how many of these rumours are true. MS have got a lot to do to catch my interest- the PS4 hasn't really shown anything exciting yet (to me) so god know's what they'll show. A new Halo and Forza or whatever aren't really going to cut it- at least not enough for a day one purchase. And Kinect... Kinect better be fookin' amazing or they're screwed.

It's almost as if you're worried...

I can still be swayed by either the new Xbox or PS4- though I'll own both eventually. My experience with the 360 has been the opposite to your own. I've had no RRoD's, a good list of exclusives (loads if you count XBLA games), have no chavs on my friends list (everyone else I keep muted) and have had a jolly 6 years worth of gaming out of my 360- only been on Xbox Live for 3. Paying for online has been the only real negative.

But as I've said, I'll be waiting for either the PS4 or 360 to really wow me before I splash the cash and I'm still perfectly content with my current gen consoles (And Gamecube)- so it's probably going to be 6 to 12 months after release before I buy either console.

Different tastes or simply because they can't afford em all?

Got my PS3 in 2008 but only decided to get a 360 last year due to being able to afford one and the bulk of the games that interested me were out and cheap.

Glad I bought it as I finally got to sample games like Halo, Left4Dead, Minecraft and Gears after looking on in envy for years.

I think there'll be a lot more ideas, info and actual consoles on show than we saw at the PS4 announcement and I have no doubt it'll be a lot more divisive as well. I expect it to annoy traditionalists as I think it will be more media based though that will mean little in terms of what games experience it can deliver. I would imagine Microsoft's aim with this console is to make it the centre of the living room, but that won't necessarily make it any less of a games console, after all was the Playstation 2 any less of a games console because it was the first console to have a DVD player in it?

I should be get both next gen consoles, but which I get first is all down to who can capture my imagination first and the PS4 hasn't quite done that so far (though I'm sure there's still plenty to be revealed about it), so I'm looking forward to it, should be an interesting compare and contrast to what we saw in February.

  49. Beebop10 on 24 Apr '13 said:

The key question is whether it'll come with a windows OS . If it does, it could just be like a weak pc with all a PC's API overheads. This will lower the graphics bar considerably for cross -platform titles and the PS4's in-house developed titles could be vastly superior. Already with its unified architecture and 8GB of GDDR5 PS4 has a humongous bandwidth advantage.

In some ways the PS4 is better than modern high end PCs:

PS4 has a direct bus to the GPU "that allows it to read directly from system memory or write directly to system memory, bypassing its own L1 and L2 caches." The end result is that it removes synchronization issues between the CPU and GPU. "We can pass almost 20 gigabytes a second down that bus," Cerny said, pointing out that it's "larger than the PCIe on most PCs!"

fair enough but it does seem like some people seem to do it out of brand loyalty i.e the whole xbox vs ps3 nonsense.

on a off track note we had reverse gaming experiences  i got my ps3 last year and recently just blasted through the uncharted series (2 being the best for me, 3 being very tiring) god of war series (excellent story and gameplay) now going through the amazing little big planet games and most of the Ps+ games.

As a multiformat gamer, with PC as my primary platform, and 360 for console exclusives, this is the big question for me. Over the last 12-18 months I find I use my 360 less and less. I can go entire months without even turning it on. Every time Microsoft have spoken about new features in that time, it seems to be about using the Xbox for non-gaming entertainment. Or Kinect. If May 21 doesn't blow me away, I may very well be going PS4.

If Microsoft want the internet to explode when they make this reveal then they should have an hour and a half presser dedicated solely to the media functionality of the box and then at the end just have a big screen with the names of all the Devs* making launch titles for it just scrolling down the screen. The carnage would be amazing.

*Just make sure there's at least 12-15 Developers names that appear on the screen at the end though.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it this gen, there really isn't enough of a difference between them (less apples and oranges, more peaches and nectarines). I own and am fully subscribed to both, but I don't feel like I would've missed out on too much if I didn't own one or the other.

The original Halo was one of those rare games that were worth buying the console just for that one game, just like the Ocarina of Time was on N64. Haven't seen the like with the exclusives this generation unfortunately, not that there hasn't been fantastic games collectively, but not that one definitive first party title that has defined a console.

XBox 360 - Halo, Gears of War, Forza and maybe The Witcher 2

Also, up until 2 years ago, had the best versions high rated multi-plat games. (GTA4, Red Dead Redemption, Orange Box, Bioshock, Skyrim)

PS3 - Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, Journey, God of War, Little Big Planet and maybe ICO/Shadow of Colossus HD and Okami HD. Killzone and Infamous are worth mentioning. Last of Us, Beyond 2 Souls, Last Guardian (maybe?) are soon to join them.

Multi-plat games are now at least as good as 360.

All of these are killer app games/franchises, though Gears and Halo have staled in recent years. But in the first couple of years they were definitely good enough to be system sellers. I got by on 360 because of the great multi-plat versions of games. Since 2010, apart from Skyrim, that's no longer the case. So now, ps3 is by far the better console. Microsoft really needed a few more great exclusives in the last 3 years, but haven't really invested in much apart from Halo and Kinect, while Sony have gone all out. Sony have the momentum, and hopefully Microsoft aren't too deluded to realise and will work harder next gen, because they won't have the respect for Halo or Gears this time round, or better multi-plat games.

  61. Imaduck on 25 Apr '13 said:

Yay! Excited! They have it really easy here frankly, I think they're the only company on the planet that could f**k it up though

Needs as others are saying its' own "Combat Evolved" or "Gears of War". It needs a new IP (many other new 1's as well, big problem 360 had) that'll be adored for years to come and hopefully not clubbed to death with a milk bottle  I'd really like to see the Kinect tech totally integrated. Don't get me wrong, I didn't buy Kinect and I don't like gimmicky motion games as they never seem to get beyond that single selling point.
If done right though, if the tech (newest version) was implemented well (perhaps software updateable?) I reckon you could be looking at the first console that could rival PC in that you could play strategy games on it, as well if not better than on PC as you have 2 hands. IF. DONE. RIGHT. See paragraph 1

They could maybe subtly "Buff" autoaim on consoles with it. Sort of have it sense your earliest movement and react more quickly, again it'd be a real push similar to autoaim push in CE. They need a Halo game, just to keep the field and nostalgia there. I can think of 2 really (no pun intended):

. Halo 2 anniversary - insane NOT to do this, would sell like Welsh measles vaccinations.
. Halo 5. This is a VERY important 1 in the life of the console, in MS's arsenal and in seeing if Halo is going anywhere. Halo 4 was a real "break the ice" and they handled it well enough but not Halo well, still there were glimpses of brilliance. They wasted too much on crap new designs, generic music, overcomplicated, power eating, ugly designs ("Japanese" element is quite strong), overcomplicated crap quality sound. The reason it's important is to see whether 343 listened and if so, what to. Really they need to stop trying to redesign the entire thing, they're meant to be adopting it not remaking it. It lost its identity with 4 and even Bungie's Reach to an extent.

Endless potential. We shall see! :)

Yes, all great games, but none of those titles individually would be worth buying the consoles for (Gears of War and MSG4 maybe, but both fell short of classic status for me). The kind of game I'm talking about is if you only buy that one title and the console, then you've still got your money's worth.

I think both consoles have had plenty to offer this gen and I'm gonna disagree with you about the PS3 being by far the best console. The 360 still plays games better for me with faster updates, smoother frame rates and better online, and while the PS3 has certainly been more eclectic over recent years and I love it for that, nearly all third party titles I buy for my Xbox. I don't think the PS3 does a terrible job with third party games, apart from the awkward early days, they still feel like a smoother and more efficient experience on the 360 and I think that counts for something.

I'm ready to give Microsoft my money on day 1 so am really pleased they are finally announcing something. It might finally put to rest all the ludicrous rumor and speculation which has plagued the yet unreleased console so far.

In rough order of preference it would be good to see some:

Gameplay (controller, Kinect integration, Smartglass v.2)
    A new IP or 2.
    Tech specs
    Streaming/downloading potential
    Future of XBox Live
    Media features
    What it looks like.

It's all about release dates for me.

I'm sure like most enthusiastic gamers i will be getting both machines, but can only afford one initially, there will in all probability be little difference between the two once the dust settles so whoever releases first will be getting my money first.

Got an image in my head of MS bringing Don Mattrick on stage to build and order a double pepperoni with stuffed crust through Kinect.

THAT, just made me laugh out loud on the train.

This official announcement has me officially excited!

If it has mandatory "always Kinect on"... i'm out. I have no need for a MS spycam in my livingroom, tracking my every move, analising me and my family and sending all that data to MS headquarters for marketing and advertising purposes. A console is to play games on, not to play the user. I don't want a console that wants to take over my tv watching. I want that s**t seperate.

The ps4 has its own kinect style camera bar thing that has to be always on to work with the new controller, so it looks like you wont be playing any games next gen' then.

I got my money on PS4, but I still want to see what M$ is going to offer. I also want to see what rumors are true, and which ones are not, which will determine how much laughing im going to be doing.

At the same time we will be demonstrating a new machine that does everything the new MS machine does plus

    Makes you coffee
    Massages you gently
Allows you to order any food from anywhere at any time and be delivered to your chair
Automatically deletes all references to Justin Beiber from the entire internet

We will also be providing biscuits... Yes. people, BISCUITS!!!

So I wouldn't bother watching that if I were you.

    Love
    SONY

About time. Now hopefully most of the speculation and rumors can stop. I say most, because like Sony I'm sure they'll still not reveal everything at the conference, and leave the finer details out of it. Still, it will be interesting to see what they have to say.

If anything the rumours between now and then will get worse. Just instead of being 'rumours from sources' it'll be 'leaks from sources'

Quite right, I'd rather have a rumour than a leak.

All of these are killer app games/franchises, though Gears and Halo have staled in recent years. But in the first couple of years they were definitely good enough to be system sellers.

I would argue another 360 game could be considered a system seller, now it's also out on PC but it's exclusive to 360 on consoles. Like Halo, it was a system seller for me, it's not even be out a full year and it's sold 6 million copies with no signs of slowing down.

    Minecraft.

At the moment my next gen plans are a WiiU and either a 720 or PS4.

To be honest MS are going to have to pull something very impressive out to sway me. They just don't have the exclusives that the competition have.

I hope they announce Minecraft 2 ! Everyone would go f**king mental.

  78. backcue on 25 Apr '13 said:

Well of course M$ will have more to talk about than at the PS4 launch. They have had an extra three months to get one up on $ony. The PS4 looks like a day one purchase for me as they seem to have hit the nail on the head with the developers.. Like many people have said on here, i'll be watching with interest but I doubt I'll be swayed.

Everything so far is pointing to Kinect party games and connectivity with Windows 8. I'm sure they'll talk about Halo and Forza which do not interest me.

Anyway keep an open mind people and lets see...

. Halo 2 anniversary - insane NOT to do this, would sell like Welsh measles vaccinations.

Halo 2 destroyed my interest in Halo to this day. Disappointing and beguiling in so many ways. Halo on Earth sounded so awesome but then the identikit corridors from Halo 1 re-emerged and all my enthusiasm for it waned.
Played it to completion, story made no sense and ended stupidly.

Would it sell like hot cakes? Probably a bit less than ODST which I'm guessing was 3m+, so not bad for a patch up and re-release.

I don't think MS are going to hit a middle ground (just my feeling) with this reveal. I can see it being either the best thing ever or total commercial sucide.

To stop the Internet from ripping them apart the moment it's over, they have to address the always on DRM question in the show. Because leaving that question open will be the worst thing they can do

Or possibly the best thing. Just means its the only thing people will be talking about in the build up to E3, then there they can reveal that its a lot of s**te.

  84. TheLastDodo on 25 Apr '13 said:

I can't believe some people actually think someone from MS is going to walk onstage at the reveal and confirm always on with unbridled enthusiasm and fireworks.

Chances are we'll find out for certain when IGN get the world exclusive retail 720 unboxing, if it's real they're not going to just admit to it, they'll be cagey and keep hushed for as long as possible building up to launch.

BTW not aimed at you 777, your post just reminded me of some odd things I've read.

EDIT:  wasn't aimed at you either Stone but do you really think that? I'd say every day they don't clear up this rumour, they're potentially losing customers.

If done right though, if the tech (newest version) was implemented well (perhaps software updateable?) I reckon you could be looking at the first console that could rival PC in that you could play strategy games on it, as well if not better than on PC as you have 2 hands. IF. DONE. RIGHT.

Really? I got tired from waving at Kinect the other day (I want to state I don't own one this was around a friends) for it to pick up where I was sat so I could flick through the youtube app (which was very cumbersome, ended up using the controller).
Imagine doing that for the entire duration of a C&C skirmish... no thanks!

Stretch your hands out infront of you and try holding them there for 5 minutes without it being a pain. Now think about doing it for 30 minutes to an hour or more

as well if not better than on PC as you have 2 hands. IF. DONE. RIGHT.

Do you play on PC with one hand behind your back?

I'm with you there Starv, not even in the same league as CE, but a lot of people seem to have some absurd nostalgia for 2. Think it's mainly because they never played the first 1 online :(

Good news, because it means games can keep moving forward and be far more expansive than they were the last 2 years. The current gen consoles are holding back the new games being released, basically, let's be honest. The photo realistic graphics for PC games from the last 6 years are how all new games should look from now on, on every hardcore gaming platform.

I bought that Metro game about a year ago, have barely played it but the graphics are amazing for a 6 year old game, that's the minimum standard I expect from console games now. Bioshock Infinite has got the closest to that in recent years, and the PS3 re-release of Crysis 1 got especially close too, unbelievably beautiful console game.
